This was my first time volunteering abroad, and I could not have wished for a better experience! ARA is such an amazing place where you are surrounded by wonderful animals and people all day! The tasks are well organized and communicated beforehand, and there is plenty of free time as well. I think everyone who loves animals will love ARA! I will definitely come back! 🩷🐶

Her proactive attitude was truly appreciated — she was always ready to lend a hand, take and initiative.Mariana developed a special bond with the dogs in our care. She showed patience, kindness, and genuine affection toward each one, taking time to understand their individual needs and personalities.

This was my first time volunteering and I truly believe that I could not have chosen a better place. The staff, volunteers and animals of ARA are so incredibly welcoming and sweet that everyone immediately becomes part of their community. Due to the shared love of the animals the staff and volunteers are all hardworking and finding joy in that work. At the same time the staff members are always respectful and kind - helping us in whatever way they can. My time at ARA will forever be an incredibly happy memory of mine that I hope to relive when I am able to come back.

This was my third time volunteering at ARA and I had the most wonderful time - just like the other two times. The staff and other volunteers are incredibly hardworking, kind and helpful, which means that you immediately feel like a part of the community at ARA. It is the most special place with fantastic people, who care deeply about all the animals that come to the shelter and I am so grateful to have been a part of it once again. You get to learn so much from the volunteer work about all aspects of the shelter care - from cleaning to training and adoption events. I look forward to returning soon!

I stayed at ARA for almost three weeks. It was my first volunteer experience as well as my first solo trip and I couldn't be happier I did it. Everybody is super nice and welcoming, the shelter are great and the tasks are well organised and exactly as communicated beforehand, which gives you plenty of free time to spend more time with the animals or explore the area. I highly recommend this experience to everyone who loves animals and wants to have a good time!!

My second time at ARA was again wonderful. The staff helps you with everything if you need and the other volunteers were all very friendly. Working during the shifts gets easier by time and on your days off you can explore Portugal. All of the dogs and cats were lovely and I'm really looking forward to coming again. So thank you to all the people working there and again for this nice experience at ARA, I can only recommend it for everyone. 🐶🐱❤️

I had the best time on my second experience at ARA. The environment at the shelter is like no where I have been before, and I hope to come back for years and years to come. All of the staff and volunteers have one thing in common, and that's their love for all of the animals there, making it an inspiring place to work, even in the heat! Even with ongoing renovations to make the shelter an even better place for the animals and volunteers, the staff were very helpful in making sure we were happy and had a comfortable place to stay at all times. I had an amazing time and met friends for life!

I couldn't have imagined a better place for my first volunteer experience abroad! At first glance you can see how much the ARA team cares for their animals, along with lots of expertise and wide knowledge. As a volunteer I immediately felt welcomed and within these 4 weeks I learned a lot about working and training with dogs, met amazing people and got to know the beautiful the shelter. The staff always cared for our wellbeing and the work at the shifts is well organised. Can't recommend it enough! You'll have an unforgettable time while making a real impact at ARA :))

This was my 3rd time volunteering at ARA and definitely won't be my last. Each experience I have here is amazing and I always create lasting memories and friendships with people from different countries! The staff are fantastic and you can tell they all extremely care about the dogs and cats. They welcome you and make you feel at home from the second you walk through the gates. 2 weeks went by too fast and I can't wait to come again hopefully soon!

My second stay at ARA was truly amazing! I met so many nice people from all over the world and had so much fun with them. Everything at ARA is well organised and the staff is always ready to help and tries to make everything possible for the volunteers. You feel welcome from the very first second. I also enjoyed the work with and for the animals a lot and it is wonderful to see that everything is given for the animals. I enjoyed every second of my stay and cannot wait to be back as soon as possible. I can highly recommend volunteering at ARA. You will have an unforgettable time there!
