I've volunteered at the shelter several times now, and each experience has been memorable. The staff are passionate and the animals are so well cared for. Thank you for all the work that you're doing! Every time I return, I'm reminded of how much I value being part of ARA's mission. Helping the dogs and cats whether through walking, cleaning, or just spending time with them is both rewarding and grounding. This was my first time volunteering abroad, and it truly exceeded all my expectations. The daily tasks were well-organized and easy to follow, and there was always support when needed. The mix of work, free time, and being around animals made for a very balanced and enjoyable experience. Everyone at ARA was kind and welcoming, which made it easy to feel comfortable from day one. I'm really thankful for the time I spent there and would be happy to come back in the future.😊

Working with ARA was a fantastic experience! I loved meeting all the volunteers and dogs and cats. The volunteer accommodation was lovely and uber eats is available to get groceries upon arrival. There was a lot of shoveling poop involved but caring for and training the animals felt very meaningful and it was a pleasure to see some dogs get adopted during my stay. The staff are super kind and welcoming and flexible.

Grace volunteered with us for two weeks, and it was the first time we welcomed her. From the very beginning, she showed great enthusiasm, responsibility, and a genuine willingness to help in any way she could. She adapted quickly to our routines, communicated clearly, and worked well with the rest of the volunteer team. Grace was respectful, kind, and brought a positive energy to the space. This was my first time volunteering and I truly believe that I could not have chosen a better place. The staff, volunteers and animals of ARA are so incredibly welcoming and sweet that everyone immediately becomes part of their community. Due to the shared love of the animals the staff and volunteers are all hardworking and finding joy in that work. At the same time the staff members are always respectful and kind - helping us in whatever way they can. My time at ARA will forever be an incredibly happy memory of mine that I hope to relive when I am able to come back.

This was my third time volunteering at ARA and I had the most wonderful time - just like the other two times. The staff and other volunteers are incredibly hardworking, kind and helpful, which means that you immediately feel like a part of the community at ARA. It is the most special place with fantastic people, who care deeply about all the animals that come to the shelter and I am so grateful to have been a part of it once again. You get to learn so much from the volunteer work about all aspects of the shelter care - from cleaning to training and adoption events. I look forward to returning soon!

I stayed at ARA for almost three weeks. It was my first volunteer experience as well as my first solo trip and I couldn't be happier I did it. Everybody is super nice and welcoming, the shelter are great and the tasks are well organised and exactly as communicated beforehand, which gives you plenty of free time to spend more time with the animals or explore the area. I highly recommend this experience to everyone who loves animals and wants to have a good time!!

My second time at ARA was again wonderful. The staff helps you with everything if you need and the other volunteers were all very friendly. Working during the shifts gets easier by time and on your days off you can explore Portugal. All of the dogs and cats were lovely and I'm really looking forward to coming again. So thank you to all the people working there and again for this nice experience at ARA, I can only recommend it for everyone. 🐶🐱❤️

I had the best time on my second experience at ARA. The environment at the shelter is like no where I have been before, and I hope to come back for years and years to come. All of the staff and volunteers have one thing in common, and that's their love for all of the animals there, making it an inspiring place to work, even in the heat! Even with ongoing renovations to make the shelter an even better place for the animals and volunteers, the staff were very helpful in making sure we were happy and had a comfortable place to stay at all times. I had an amazing time and met friends for life!
