Animal Rescue Algarve

We are a NGO formed to help abandoned and mistreated animals in the Algarve, South of Portugal.
Our kennels are beautiful little wooden houses, fully insulated, where we pair 2 dogs maximum in each kennel so they have a peaceful place to chill and sleep. All our dogs go for walks and have fun time at our parks every day.

We have a very motivated team that genuinely love animals. This place has proven to be a healing place not only for animals but to a few good human souls too :) Our goal is to give a second chance to those abandoned dogs and cats by finding them new loving families and homes, locally and abroad :-) We also aim to educate and inform the local population about the benefits of sterilising their animals and the raise awareness about animal welfare.

It was my second time at ARA, and I had just as much fun as my first visit, if not more! Knowing the Shelter’s routine, I was able to spend even more time hanging out with the dogs and cats and training the dogs with the staff and trainer’s help.
The location is truly special, and I feel a deep connection with it and all the dogs.
The staff is amazing, so helpful and flexible.
I definitely plan to come back soon because I feel like I’ve found a second home here.

Diego volunteered with our shelter for four weeks, returning right after Christmas to help at the beginning of the year, and his dedication was outstanding. He spent a great deal of quality time with the dogs, showing exceptional patience, consistency, and compassion. Diego formed a special bond with Mayra and Cravo, two dogs housed alone in the kennel, ensuring they received attention, enrichment, and affection they truly needed. His presence made a real difference, and we are deeply grateful!

This was my first time volunteering at an animal shelter, and it was an incredible experience. :)
The work itself was nice, and i enjoyed every second of it. The dogs and cats are incredibly lovely and I loved spending time with them. Everyone was extremely kind and welcoming from the first day and I had so much fun!
The town is also really nice and the beach is not that far either, which made the whole experience even better.
I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who loves animals and wants to make a difference while meeting amazing people. :)

Elena volunteered with our dogs and cats shelter for two weeks, and her contribution was truly appreciated. She showed genuine care for the animals, approaching every task with kindness, patience, and responsibility. Elena was always willing to help wherever needed, whether it was cleaning, walking dogs, or spending time socializing with the cats. She followed instructions carefully, worked well with the team, and maintained a positive attitude throughout her time with us. We recommend Elena!

As my first time experience, it was amazing. Everyone was lovely and the work is very organized, providing care with much love. There you can also find a lot of diversity among the travelers. Would absolutely recommend.

Vitor volunteered with us for almost a month at our shelter. From the very beginning, he brought a friendly attitude and a great vibe that was felt by both the team and the animals. He was always willing to help, never hesitating to offer his suppor. Vitor approached every task with kindness, responsibility, and care, and his positive energy made our daily work lighter and more joyful. We are very grateful for his time, dedication, and the love he shared with our animals and the people!

Mathew stayed with us for three weeks and came during the Christmas period, which was an especially busy and important time for our team. His help was truly valuable and greatly appreciated. He is a dedicated, kind, and reliable volunteer who always approached his tasks with care and responsibility. Mathew showed great empathy with the animals and created a special bond with Tuna, one of our most lonely dogs, giving him attention, patience, and companionship.We are very grateful for his support!

I had an amazing experience at the Shelter. The people there were incredibly kind and welcoming from the first day, and it never felt like work because it was so much fun.

Taking care of the dogs and cats was truly rewarding the dogs are wonderful, and you can really see and feel that the work you do makes a difference. It’s very meaningful to help abandoned animals and be part of something so positive.

The location is also great, which made the whole experience even better. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who loves animals and wants to have a fullfilling experience:)

Ronja volunteered with us for two weeks and proved to be an excellent and dedicated helper. She approached both dogs and cats with great care, patience, and genuine affection, quickly earning their trust. Ronja was always reliable, positive, and willing to help wherever needed. What truly stood out was her initiative: she often chose to walk the dogs even during her free time. Ronja would be a valuable asset to any organization she chooses to support!
