Animal Rescue Algarve

We are a NGO formed to help abandoned and mistreated animals in the Algarve, South of Portugal.
Our kennels are beautiful little wooden houses, fully insulated, where we pair 2 dogs maximum in each kennel so they have a peaceful place to chill and sleep. All our dogs go for walks and have fun time at our parks every day.

We have a very motivated team that genuinely love animals. This place has proven to be a healing place not only for animals but to a few good human souls too :) Our goal is to give a second chance to those abandoned dogs and cats by finding them new loving families and homes, locally and abroad :-) We also aim to educate and inform the local population about the benefits of sterilising their animals and the raise awareness about animal welfare.

It was my second time at ARA and I had again just a wonderful time! The three weeks flew by and I can’t wait to be back soon! Spending so much time with the dogs and cats is just amazing for every animal lover. The animals and people you meet quickly grow a place in your heart. 🫶
I really can’t recommend this place enough!

First time at Ara and going back for a second time is already certain, needless to say it is a wonderful place to be at. The staff & co-volunteers were all good hearted, amazing people that made the place feel like home very quick, positive & always supportive of each other. The location is great, the nature beautifully calming. Time passes by insanely quick, work does'nt necessarily feel like work, spending time with the animals & to feel like making an impact on their lifes -no matter how small- was enormously beautiful and fulfilling. Would & will recommend Ara to anyone that loves animals.

Franziska stayed with us for three weeks and proved to be a wonderful volunteer from the very beginning. She was caring, responsible, and truly dedicated to the dogs’ well-being. She spent a lot of quality time with them, always attentive to their needs. Franziska created a special bond with Tucano, showing great patience and affection, which helped him feel safe and confident. We are very thankful for her support and would happily recommend her.

I had a great second stay at ARA! It was wonderful to spend so much time with all the dogs and cats and my stay was just as great as the first time. I was also happy to see many people again and to meet so many new ones.
Can’t wait to be back! :))

Luisa spent one month volunteering at our dogs and cats shelter and quickly became a valued part of our daily life. She was reliable, kind, and genuinely committed to the well-being of the animals. Luisa showed special dedication to two very shy dogs, happily feeding them every afternoon and patiently building trust with them. Thanks to her calm presence and consistency, both dogs made visible progress and became more confident. We are very grateful for her help!

It was my second visit to ARA and it was just as wonderful and special as the last time! I immediately felt welcome, and it was heartwarming to see all the dogs and cats again, even though thankfully many have already been adopted! :)) It already feels like a little second home to me, and I can't wait to come back. 🫶🏻 I can truly recommend this place to anyone who loves animals and wants to make a positive contribution to their lives at the shelter.

Nehle volunteered with us in December and chose to return again this month for almost three weeks, which already says a lot about her dedication. She is a very committed and caring volunteer who truly enjoys spending time with the dogs, often even during her free time. Her presence is calm, reliable, and appreciated by both the animals and the team. We are extremely grateful for her continued support and would happily welcome her back again in the future!
