My two weeks at ARA were great. There were always between 15 and 20 total volunteers and we had two 2.5 hour shifts each working day where we walked the dogs, cleaned and then socialized with the dogs and cats. They have a main guesthouse that houses 8 people (typically all female) and then 4 trailers that have 3 guests each. The facilities were well equipped and they had a lost & found for extra gear that was very helpful when it rained for a few days.

It was a wonderful experience, the staff is really friendly, the daily tasks are easy and basic and you can enjoy with the animals every day, play with them, walk with them. Each of the dogs and cats has a charming personality. The facilities on site are well-equipped and comfortable.

Tatiana is an amazing volunteer who loves the animals. She is always ready to help with any task, from cleaning and feeding to walking and playing. She has a great rapport with the cats, who adore her and her gentle touch. She is also very helpful with the adoptions and the events. She is a reliable, hard-working, and kind person. She is a valuable volunteer and a wonderful friend to the animals. She gets a five-star rating and a big hug!

ARA was amazing. The living spaces are clean and well equipped, the staff is lovely and very helpful.The working hours give you a lot of free time in the day. It's also great because there are a lot of volunteers so you never feel too lost and there's always someone you can ask if you need clarification for something and don't want to bother staff. The location is great, not too far from some incredibly scenic coastal towns. The beautiful valleys make the dog walks all the more enjoyable, would very much recommend to any the shelter lover.

Isla was a pleasure to work with. She was great with our animals, very responsible, helpful, hardworking and with a positive attitude towards everyone. We can definitely recommend Isla as a volunteer and hope she will come back one day :)

ARA is an absolutely awesome place to be. I met so many lovely people and animals and have tons of new beautiful memories. I loved this experience and can only highly recommend it to others 😊

Ricarda is a wonderful volunteer who has been helping at the Animal Shelter for over a year. She is always friendly, caring, and compassionate towards the animals and the staff. She has a special bond with the dogs, especially the ones who are shy or scared. She spends time with them, plays with them, and gives them lots of cuddles and treats. She also helps with cleaning, feeding, and grooming the animals, as as assisting with adoptions and events. She is reliable, responsible, and hard-working. She is a great asset to the shelter and a joy to work with.

This was an amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone travelling through Portugal. The shelter attracts the most caring type of people, and we have met amazing friends from all around the world here. The animals are cared for very well, and the staff really respect and appreciate the volunteers. If you love dogs and cats this is a perfect place for you. I love this place and will definitely return whenever I'm back in this part of the world!

5 out of 5 stars They was always willing to go the extra mile. I saw them spend hours cleaning cages, playing with animals, and talking to potential adopters. They never complained or made excuses.They had a genuine love for animals, they really cared about the well-being of the animals.They enthusiasm and dedication were contagious. They are a true gem and I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a rewarding volunteer experience.
