Description

In case the volunteer wants to stay at the community, contribution is 15€ per day in Caneças, and 10€ per day in Lisbon. It helps us to pay for accomodation, food (only in Caneças), transportation and visits we plan to discover portuguese culture, Lisbon city, and other activities that make sense (tours, contact with other associations, participation to debates...)

The Experience

We are a social and humanitarian NGO whose aim is to combat the causes of poverty. It's a decentralized movement in which each group roots its activities in the local reality. In Caneças, there are between 15 and 20 of us who live in community following the values of the movement. Our activities include collecting and sorting donated items, preparing the store, as well as community activities such as cooking, gardening and caring for animals.

My time here was really made by the interns and people living in the community who are so kind and funny. It's a very beautiful place made clearly by a lot of hard work. The hours are long (about 42 a week in Canecas) but because my stay fell on some national holidays I got some extra days off. You will be in a shared dorm with possibly up to 5 other people. For girls the closest toilet is a dry one outside and the showers are in the laundry room which I do think were a little misrepresented in the photos on here. If you're veggie you cook your own food also :) I am glad for the experience

Volunteering at the organization was one the best travel experiences I have ever had. You can expect to work 5 days a week 8:30-6:30. But the days and weeks will fly by and before you know it you will feel like part of the family. Even with just 2 days off you can explore so much of Portugal (if you're willing to take some early and some late buses). Additionally, you will get to meet the most loving, kind, and supportive people . I could go on and on, but I'll just say this. If you're thinking about traveling to Portugal and volunteering at the organization, do it. You won't regret it, I promise :)

Volunteering at the organization was my first world packers experience and it was absolutely amazing. The work was so fulfilling and the people there were so welcoming and kind. I got to meet some amazing people while I was there and make an impact on the community. If you want to work hard to make a good contribution but also have a great time and meet amazing people, you should definitely volunteer here. It's incredible and very impressive at the same time how fast you feel like home there. I would call it the place of healing peace and development! The love and care which is facing you everyday makes you to feel rlly a part of something important. I feel helpful and meaningful at this place. You can be yourself there. So natural and unrestrained. My heart is getting full with inspiration and motivation for life there. Thank you the organization. You teached me a lot with your concept. I will come back!
