The Experience

Phil's passionate dedication to 'Permaculture' principles over the last 30 years has transformed an old 6 hectare farm into a mature ecosystem, with ponds, streams and woodland. Your help is needed to maintain and develop this forest garden using syntropic and regenerative techniques. We generally work a few hours either side of a fairly long lunch, our evenings are often spent chatting and playing games around the dining table.

Phil is extremely knowledgeable about all things permaculture and syntropic agriculture. If you would like to learn by doing, this is an amazing opportunity to do just that. Helen also makes amazing meals which are appreciated after what is often quite physical work. There is not much to do in the area so you need to be keen to work, to learn and to enjoy a quiet lifestyle. Accommodation is private and nice enough. Hours are often a bit longer than indicated here but as Phil always gives you new tasks to work on and is happy to explain everything, the days go by quite fast. Thank you both!

My personal experience differed from what I had anticipated and from what previous volunteers described. I arrived during an intense heatwave and was the only volunteer present. The workload amounted to roughly 8 hours a day, significantly more than the 25-hour weekly agreement. When I raised concerns about a 40-hour work week, Phil stated I would be expected to complete all assigned tasks regardless of the hours it took, and that if I disagreed I could leave. This response made me feel uncomfortable, especially given our prior agreement. I ultimately chose to leave the placement a week early

Phil replied

After 2 days work this volunteer demanded 2days off which was inconvenient to what we were doing. He claimed his hours were long, but due to the heat we were doing light work in the shade and took a very long lunch break, unless he counted his lunch break,I don't know how he thought he worked 8h. after his two days off he demanded reduced hours, in 4 days he had worked less to than half the 25h,so l judge him to be taking advantage of our hospitality and asked him to leave .
