The Experience
As a volunteer in our project, we need help 1-2 hours a day doing light housekeeping and helping with reception. The wages earned cover your cost of accommodation and the rest of the day is yours to explore! Visit nearby Pancake Rocks and harvest some mussels for dinner. Tramp along the Great Paparoa Walk, kayak the Porarari River, and gaze at glow worms among friends. Make the beautiful west coast of New Zealand your home for a few weeks!

I had so much fun at this experience! Chris, the host, was lovely - and would take you on little journeys including on nature tours around the place. It is a very cozy place to live in with both four dorm beds and private rooms. We did about thirty minutes of work everyday and then had the rest of the day off, including going down to the beach and for walks :)

I loved my stay here. The accomodation was small but really cozy & comfortable and perfect for connecting with nature. The girls I stayed with, Alina, Julia and Bean were truely lovely people and so was our host, Chris! The work wasn't hard at all.

Chris has been one of the most amazing host I've ever met! Punakaiki is an amazing place if you really want to be with the nature. The beaches, the views, the weather are all amazing! This place is great if you want peace and relaxation. Chris makes you feel really comfortable and is great with communication! He respects your space and time and also offers to take you out to secret spots only a local would know! Tom is also a great dude! I loved hearing about his stories and he also knows the area very well. I really recommend coming here especially if you have your own transport!

We had the most amazing time at the lodge. Chris is the nicest person ever and his generosity did not go unnoticed!! He would frequently take us to hidden spots and cool locations during his free time. The work is very light and every day we would have the whole afternoon off to do whatever we want eg. Going on a hike or heading to the beach. Would recommend to anyone considering this.

This was an amazing experience. Chris was a great host and made me feel welcome and part of the family. I volunteered in the winter and the work load was light and enjoyable. There is volunteer lodging which is comfortable and feels like home. Highlights: team work with the other volunteer during work hours. Making friends. Morning cuddles with Molly (dog), magical adventures with Chris and the other volunteers. Discovering secrets beaches, visiting caves and finding penguins/seals. Just 10 mins to the beach to see the sunset each afternoon was the perfect ending to the day.
