The staff is very kind. You will be cleaning up poop/diarrhea at least once a day. Bring shoes you don't mind getting poop and pee on. Some of the dogs step in their poop and are so excited to see you, so they jump on you. So either bring pants that you don't mind getting dirty or wait for the dog to calm down before entering their kennel. Be careful with Puca! This shelter is located a 25-30 minute walk from the town of Loule. In my opinion, staying 2 weeks is enough. If you see Badi, the one eyed pitbull or Giovanni, the cat give them a big kiss for me xx

I think ARA is a nice place to volunteer in if you are interested in dog training and care. The sifts are short and easy so you have a lot of free time to spend with other volunteers or the animals. But you have to really love hot weather if you planing on going between May and September and don't forget earplugs.

My two weeks at ARA were great. There were always between 15 and 20 total volunteers and we had two 2.5 hour shifts each working day where we walked the dogs, cleaned and then socialized with the dogs and cats. They have a main guesthouse that houses 8 people (typically all female) and then 4 trailers that have 3 guests each. The facilities were well equipped and they had a lost & found for extra gear that was very helpful when it rained for a few days.

It was a wonderful experience, the staff is really friendly, the daily tasks are easy and basic and you can enjoy with the animals every day, play with them, walk with them. Each of the dogs and cats has a charming personality. The facilities on site are well-equipped and comfortable.

ARA was amazing. The living spaces are clean and well equipped, the staff is lovely and very helpful.The working hours give you a lot of free time in the day. It's also great because there are a lot of volunteers so you never feel too lost and there's always someone you can ask if you need clarification for something and don't want to bother staff. The location is great, not too far from some incredibly scenic coastal towns. The beautiful valleys make the dog walks all the more enjoyable, would very much recommend to any the shelter lover.

This was an amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone travelling through Portugal. The shelter attracts the most caring type of people, and we have met amazing friends from all around the world here. The animals are cared for very well, and the staff really respect and appreciate the volunteers. If you love dogs and cats this is a perfect place for you. I love this place and will definitely return whenever I'm back in this part of the world!

Her calm, confident approach helps them feel safe and understood. Mi experiencia en ARA fue muy buena. Dudo que pueda agregar mucho más de lo que dicen todas las reseñas previas, pero sí afirmar que cumple con la expectativa. El trabajo realizaado allí es muy bueno, las instalaciones para los animales están muy bien diseñadas y adaptadas. Se está atento al bienestar de ellos y se busca socializarlos y conseguirles una familia. El ambiente de trabajo es muy bueno, el staff y los voluntarios que me encontré allí en general tienen todos muy buena energía y ganas de colaborar en un proyecto tan importante. Definitivamente recomendable y espero algun día volver!!
