The Experience

I need your help to maintain the hostel and teach English to my Japanese students. You DON'T have to be from a native English-speaking country. When its busy, we usually have activities from around 10am to 2pm, preparing the room for coming guests. The work involves cleaning the rooms and keeping the house clean. I can cover your food cost!

I stayed at the hostel for two weeks and loved every day of it! I helped with cleaning the guesthouse, doing maintenance work, and teaching English, which was one of the highlights. We also went to the community hall to teach, visited an elementary school to play with the kids, and once went to a local museum to help out. Kai was super nice, respectful, and amazing to work with. He also led great boxing workouts. We had some lovely guests, both local and foreign, and it was great hanging out with them. In your free time, you can bike around town, swim in the river, and go on hikes.

Kai was a genuinely kind, open-minded and respectful guy. He was very welcoming and everything went smoothly and professionally. I'm very thankful for the boxing training and delicious meals that he shared with me. The daily tasks matched with what's on the description, the English students were respectful and easygoing. The place itself was very beautiful and peaceful. The rivers, trees, waterfalls, the town, the mountains, were absolutely stunning. If you like nature and to be away from the overwhelming cities, this place is the perfect fit for you.

This was my first backpacking trip, and it was truly eye-opening. It helped me realize what I've been missing while working in the city. Kai was a fantastic host, providing clear instructions and support. The diverse group, from junior high to seniors, was passionate and kind. Spending time in nature was the best part—hiking, onsen, and local cuisine made the experience even more memorable. I highly recommend this adventure for anyone wanting to reconnect with nature and themselves.

Vanguards the hostel is a small hostel close to the city but in the middle of the countryside. Surrounded by nature, rivers, lakes, and mountains. Totally recommend it if you want to disconnect from the noise of the city. Kai is an amazing host; he cooks like a pro (even if he denies it), makes sure that you and his guests are having a great experience, and gives great advice on what to do during your free time. I got to teach (and I truly enjoyed it), did housekeeping, and adventure myself into painting a quote in the kitchen! It was a lovely experience where I learned a lot about Japan.

An amazing experience! Kai was so accommodating and easy to work with. He happily showed me around the town and I was able to get to know some people in the community. The work was reasonable, classes were enjoyable & his students very friendly. Plenty of nature & hiking trails around the hostel. Kai also coaches boxing which was heaps of fun. I will definitely be coming back here :)
