Quinta da Granja

A traveler should choose to be here if they are actively seeking to live in nature and with animals. This is not a party farm so it offers a chance to do meaningful work in a beautiful landscape with lots of time for self reflection. Most important, you will learn practical skills about how to look after livestock in a mountain ecosystem and about forest regeneration, carbon sequestration and biodiversity.

Additional learning come from working in this ecosystem on the Douro River and how to regenerate soil from invasive eucalyptus which are a plague across southern Europe.

I do NOT accept volunteer applications of less than 2 weeks.

I am 47 years YOUNG and have worked with farmers in more than 38 countries including Afghanistan, Kenya, Syria and Vietnam. I am very high energy and passionate about credible sustainability and will teach anyone that is willing to learn. I work best with people who are self motivated and independent. I value every volunteer who comes to my farm and am committed to everyone having a positive experience. First, I spend time to communicate with any potential volunteer before they commit and travel to Marco de Canaveses and ensure a smooth arrival at the local train station. Second, I spend a lot of time and energy in both preparing for your arrival and meal planning. This is the best way i can show my immediate appreciation for the daily efforts being made. You have a clean room, hot shower and nutritious food.

This was my first worldpackers experience and it was great. Rachel was always clear on communicating the tasks at the farm, and got to dabble in a bit of everything. We had meaningful conversations over dinner (she is an amazing cook) and she was always empowering us as women to push ourselves to do what we want to do. She is so knowledgeable. This is a great place to get away, work hard, and think. I hope your project continues to go great! I will miss the doggies and goats.

Rachel, the host, is an incredible woman with a good predisposition and energy to talk and explain everything you need to know about land management and sustainability. ALSO you will never even go hungry with the incredible meals she prepares. The farm itself is a beautiful environment, but you have to be really prepared mentally and physically as it says in the description.
- The only detail that I would have liked to know before is about the bathroom since it is located outside the house and does not have a door :/ which sometimes becomes uncomfortable and there are no photos to prove it.

From day one, we were blown away by the stunning views of the Douro River and the beautiful nature surrounding us. Our host was amazing, treating us to nutritious, homemade meals that were incredibly delicious. She welcomed us like family and made sure we felt right at home.

We got hands-on with farm work, helping with the herding and feeding of the goats, and learned a lot about local meat production. One of the highlights was learning about land management and removing invasive eucalyptus

My friend and I had an awesome experience on Rachel’s farm. She is a strong, resilient and independent woman from who we have a lot to learn. ☺️You will definitely enjoy the food and fall in love with the social, lovely and cute goats. 🐐All the conditions were well established and followed perfectly by the host. We were truly contributing to the conservation project by the different daily tasks. Also, it is a calm and relaxing place from which you have a beautiful view on the Douro river. 🏞️ We definitely recommend this volunteering experience!

I enjoyed my stay at the farm! I was there for a month and it was my first WP experience. The tasks were as expected and very satisfying to complete. I learned a lot about animal welfare and land care. I also enjoyed hanging out with the goats :). The nature on the mountain is absolutely gorgeous as well. Overall a nice experience for my first time.
