Quinta da Granja

If you are actively seeking to live in nature and with animals (goats and dogs), my farm is an ideal choice. This is not a party farm. I offer a meaningful workplan in a beautiful landscape with lots of time for self reflection, reading, napping or online studying. Most important, you will learn practical skills about how to look after livestock in a mountain ecosystem and about forest regeneration, carbon sequestration and biodiversity.

The work day including 2 work sessions (AM and PM). Farm life starts at 8 AM. The workplan is 6 days per week. On Saturday, I ask volunteers to contribute 3 hours in the morning followed by a YUMMY pasta lunch. This workplan is always working with the goats.

Additional learning comes from working in this forest ecosystem on the Douro River and how to regenerate soil from invasive eucalyptus which are a plague across southern Europe.

I do NOT accept volunteer applications of less than 2 weeks.

I am reluctant to accept volunteers who are younger than 22 and have no other verified volunteer experience on this or another platform.

I am 47 years YOUNG and have worked with farmers in more than 38 countries including Afghanistan, Kenya, Syria and Vietnam. I am very high energy and passionate about credible sustainability and will teach anyone that is willing to learn. I work best with people who are self motivated and independent. I value every volunteer who comes to my farm and am committed to everyone having a positive experience. 1. I spend time to communicate with any potential volunteer before they commit and travel to Marco de Canaveses and ensure a smooth arrival at the local train station. 2. You have a clean room, hot shower, wifi and nutritious food. 3. I spend a lot of time and energy in both preparing for your arrival and meal planning. This is the best way i can show my immediate appreciation for the daily efforts being made. If you do not want to do physical labor, this is not the right volunteer experience. Even if you volunteer to work on social media, you will be expected to do physical farm chores.

Really amazing and eye opening experience!
Taking care of the goats is not an easy task but it’s extremely rewarding. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about animal care on the farm, gardening, sustainable living and more. It’s the perfect place to disconnect as well as learn discipline.
Rachel has a great personality, gives great advice and motivates you to be a better version of yourself. The food is absolutely excellent.

I can’t recommend this experience enough. The location of the farm is beautiful, the personality and friendliness of Rachel’s (currently) 5 dogs and 15 goats are so welcoming, the tasks to be done each done each day are meaningful, and it’s a truly rewarding experience. But it’s all overshadowed by the amazing quality of the host herself. Rachel is an awesome person, within a few days you will understand this is true by the eye-opening and sometimes therapeutic conversations you will have with her. Her cooking is phenomenal and you will always learn or at least have a good laugh with her. 5/5

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the farm. Rachel is an incredibly interesting woman with lots of life experience to share, and her communication style is direct and honest, which was very refreshing. I feel very grateful to have witnessed the resilience and flexibility required to maintain a farm such as this, and the many realities - both harsh and rewarding - that come with owning and caring for animals. If you enjoy a stable routine, creative and independent work, and quiet time to reflect and reconnect (and also goats, dogs, and tasty food), I absolutely recommend this experience. 🐐🌱

This was without a doubt an incredible experience. I learned a lot about land restoration and got the chance to spend time with goats and dogs surrounded by nature.

Rachel was an amazing host — strong, caring, and always looking after the volunteers. And her food… absolutely delicious! 🍲

I would highly recommend this volunteer program: working hours are respected, you have a comfortable bed, a hot shower, great meals, and the chance to disconnect and reconnect with nature.

Thank you, Rachel. I hope to see you again! 🌿✨
