Burntwood

We live in a beautiful part of Cornwall surrounded by woods and close to Bodmin Moor. Activities at the property include gardening; collecting, splitting and stacking logs; woodland clearing; pond maintenance; bramble clearing; house cleaning and possibly help with film making. There is no average day, volunteers can select from the jobs that need doing. Breakfast is usually home made cereal, toast from home made bread and tea or coffee. My wife is vegetarian so lunch is vegetarian, she does not eat in the evening so the evening meal sometimes includes meat. We have a spare room with 2 single beds and they can be joined to make a large double bed. There are many walks locally, particularly on Bodmin Moor. We go swimming in the sea at Portwrinkle.

My wife and I live at the property and we have one cat. On an annual basis we rear 2 pigs. I am a retired Professor of film, have worked commercially directing TV ads and made film installations and many short, experimental films. My films can be seen on my website www.tonyhillfilms.com. I enjoy cooking, so all food is cooked from fresh ingredients. My wife is a retired teacher and most recently was teaching English to foreign students. We have happily hosted many volunteers over the last 17 years. We try to live as sustainably as possible and our Ecohouse performs well. Part of the house is rented for holiday accommodation on AirBnB. The house was Highly Commended for Sustainability in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors SW Awards 2010 and shortlisted for the Cornwall Sustainability Awards

My first Worldpackers experience with Tony and Pat was nothing short of brilliant. Their accommodating nature really help ease my nerves and I settled into the routine quickly. No day was the same and the tasks were enjoyable and rewarding. Tony cooked some really delicious meals with the majority of ingredients straight from the garden! I would highly recommend Tony and Pat’s eco house if you’re wanting to visit Cornwall. It was a truly beautiful place to learn more about sustainability! Thank you so much!

Tony and Pat are both very kind and Tony is keen to give recommendations on days off. Tony is also an excellent cook! The property is beautiful and very peaceful and their little cat Maisie is very sweet and friendly. I will definitely miss the serenity of being here

Suggestion for volunteers: I would advise, at the start of your stay, just going over what the exact expectation is with keeping track of the 5 hours per day just so you’re in the know and there’s no misunderstandings or confusion :) don’t be afraid to ask questions, Tony is happy to explain! :)

I really enjoyed helping out Tony and Pat for the few weeks they had me! All of the tasks were outside, like helping with the garden, logging, etc. so be prepared to get a little dirty and connect with nature. It was a very peaceful place and I got to walk around a lot and meet some of Tony’s local friends. I was a little bothered by the consistent talk of American politics and news, but I believe they are both kindhearted people and didn’t mean anything by it.

Volunteering at Burntwood was an incredibly rewarding experience. Pat and Tony are wonderfully welcoming hosts, always ensuring you feel at ease and clearly communicating expectations for the tasks. The 5 hours per day are respected. Tony took us to the train station when needed and offered fantastic recommendations for exploring nearby towns during our days off.

Tony and Pat were incredibly welcoming, making us feel like part of their family from day one. The tasks were clearly explained, and the agreed hours were always respected, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Every meal was delicious, and the place itself is stunning—cozy accommodations, a peaceful river, and a beautiful forest perfect for exploring. They ensured we had everything we needed and suggested amazing nearby spots to visit. It was the ideal place for our first volunteering experience. Highly recommended if you're looking for something peaceful and immersed in nature!
