The Experience

Help care for rescued dogs and cats at Albania’s first private shelter in Vlorë. Tasks may include feeding, cleaning kennels, bathing animals, socializing shy dogs, and simple maintenance or gardening. Vet experience is welcome but not required. You’ll stay in our on-site volunteer house with everything you need for a comfortable stay. It’s a chance to experience “Bread, Salt, and Heart”, the Albanian slogan for loyalty and hospitality.

I'll never forget my experience at Protect Me in Vlore! Liljana is the nicest host EVER, she provides you with everything you need, is super flexible and really wants you to have a good experience. The work there with Lily (one of the workers) was easy to do and to understand, unfortunately she doesn't speak english but we still managed to communicate. The dogs there are super sweet and all fully vaccinated but PLEASE, before you decide to go there, be aware that these dogs can have trauma. Some of them need space, some of them might bite if you're not careful! MUCH LOVE TO YALL❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I left the understaffed shelter early due to health and safety concerns. In my experience, the place is structurally not yet ready to host WP volunteers, and PR appears to be prioritised over access to medical care. This is not a typical private shelter. As there are no public shelters in the country, everything falls on one organisation, which I understand is a heavy responsibility. The main goal was to keep 'aggressive' dogs off the streets. However, the shelter urgently needs professional dog behaviour support and clearer safety structures before hosting volunteers.
