The Experience

Come and work on an amazing project to bring to life a historical building in the heart of Rio, close to Christ the Redeemer. This is a restoration project to turn this enormous old gem into a yoga centre/cultural centre/alternative hostel and possible vegan cafe! We are very much into music, therapies, the arts, language exchange and environmental and social projects.

Casa antigua y precaria. Trabajo pesado, pero pocas horas (4 hrs/día). El anfitrión Paul brindó poca presencia y atención. Falta seguridad para trabajo con materiales pesados y alturas. Muchos mosquitos: lleva camisa y pantalón largos. Mucha humedad por la sombra; ventila y seca la ropa. Casa sin agua potable ni caliente. Cocina aceptable. Las fotos y condiciones del anuncio eran falsas: verificar con el anfitrión. Barrio tranquilo y seguro, con bicicletas de alquiler, buses frecuentes, supermercados y farmacias cercanos. André (ayudante de Paul) asignaba el trabajo; es un excelente tipo.

Please see my response to Ricardo below....Both Iker and Ricardo were aware that Andre is running the project, he is a wonderful guy and very accommodating. The house is in a tropical part of Rio, sometimes there are mosquitos and sometimes not, but definitely not a big issue as expressed. Everyone has their opinion about what jobs they are prepared to do but Iker was provided a mask and gloves which were sufficient for the work.

La experiencia no empezó de la mejor forma porque las condiciones estipuladas en el aviso no coincidían con lo ofrecido, por ejemplo, no había WiFi, ni clases de Yoga. Las fotos también estaban adulteradas, algunas eran falsas. Las condiciones para habitar el lugar son difíciles, la humedad es un problema serio en la casa, al igual que los mosquitos. En cuanto al trabajo voluntario las tareas estaban bien organizadas, porque una persona externa se encargó de ese tema, lo que hizo de muy buena manera. Sin embargo, la seguridad en el trabajo tampoco era óptima.

Iker y Ricardo were very aware that the project was just starting and they would be the first volunteers. The house had been empty for 10 years and we had just been able to organise all the basics for volunteering such as a simple bathroom, working kitchen and comfortable beds in private rooms. Andre, who is coordinating the project is a wonderful guy who is very attentive. All pictures and images have been updated. They were never asked to do dangerous work and obviously had the right to refuse
