The Experience

I'm Sarah, and I am excited to welcome you to come stay on my land in the middle of the Alpujarras mountain range in the south of Spain. My little piece of paradise consists of about 9 hectares with 2 small casitas set on a beautiful spot just above the village of Cadiar. I'm looking for volunteers to help with everything from gardening, weeding, chopping wood, harvesting, painting, maintenance, and daily operations of a homestead in the making.

I was staying at sarahs casita for two weeks in March. The first impression was nice when she picked us up from the bus station. The casita was as written in Sarahs profile (washing machine, bathroom, kitchen). The only negative thing was that you couldn't lock the bathroom door and that the bathroom wasnt so clean. Also keep in mind that sarah buys food (mainly vegtables) but doesnt take special request (like for example pesto or certain cereals). Spending time and connecting with Sarah was quite good in the end but I think she needed some time to adjust (:

I was staying at Sarah's casita with my friend. The first impression was very nice we got our own place and every facility was working although the overall temperature was cold (keep in mind we were there in march). Sarah has a few rules but overall very understandable. The only downside to the casita was that the bathroom door wasn't able to close and the floors were quite dirty but that is inevitable because of the farming work :) The working hours are quite flexible and we could even move our off days as we pleased, however Sarah does look for results and not the amount of time you spent.

The stay with Sarah in the mountains of the Alpujarras was almost how I expected it to be. If you're willing to da lot of physical work and don't mind when your clothes get very dirty, this will be the perfect stay. Sarah showed us how everything works during the first days and even prepared food for us after our days in the cold rain. What you should keep in mind when arriving during the winter months is that it will get very cold in the casita and that there's only one stove in the dining room.

Sarah replied

Yes, it's physical work and you need work clothes. Yes, it was rather cold this March. And yes, I cooked some delicious stuff now and then.

But to clarify: The work stopped when it rained, and the woodstove heats up the common space quite nicely. Pro tip: You must remember to give it logs, and not just one at a time but several. That stove kept me and three others toasty warm all last winter so I know it works very well when properly fueled!
