The Experience

Hello, We are a Sicilian-German family consisting of Tano (40), Doro (36) and Josch (almost 3). We emigrated to Letojanni in Sicily in mid-June. There we bought a property by the sea (850 m). We want to open an eco-project with the possibility of camping. The property has been abandoned for years and we need to rebuild it from scratch. Electricity and water were already installed in April. Work with the excavator is in full swing.

I had a good Time at Tano's Place. From his place you have an amazing view. The next town and beach is a 15 minute walk away which was pretty nice. You also could easily visit the cities nearby like Taormina or spots like Isola Bella which are really worth a visit. Tano himself is a nice guy, he really tried to make us feel comfortable and respected me for being vegetarian. He even took us to Castelmola once which was nice. All in all I can recommend it but you need to keep in mind that it's a rustic camping site in nature. If you are aware of that you should go for it.

My stay at Eco Project felt ok. The most tasks I did were agreed before. My tent was really comfortable because there was a mattress in it. I really liked living in nature the whole time of my stay. The campsite is under construction work (what volunteers are helping with), so it is very narrow to live there. Tano himself can be nice as long as you share his opinion and eating habits. When you're vegetarian you're mostly respected. There were situations communication wasn't working well. You should be aware that Tano is on his own managing everything what seems to be stressfull for him.

The agreement was to work at the camp, but the hosts also asked me to clean their apartment, which wasn't part of the deal. After my day off, I chose to stay at the camp and cook instead of joining them for dinner. One host agreed, but the other confronted me aggressively, accusing me of treating the place like a hotel. Despite my attempts to discuss the situation calmly, he refused to engage respectfully. He then gave me the ultimatum to either clean their apartment or leave within 10 minutes at 8pm. Feeling unsafe, I chose to leave. The experience was unprofessional and hostile.

The contact with Daniela was often full of misunderstanding. We can't gave her only work at the camp, because the weather was bad. We ask her instead to fo something in the household to get her hours. But it was a problem. Also to be flexible with the work time. It was not possible because of the weather, to do 5 hous. We had often conversations because of the food. She doesn't respect our conditions.
