The Experience

Our place is a restaurant and Hostel used to be a Hospital which now has been restored into a beautiful artistic hub. Located in the centre of Heraklion, just a few steps from the main attraction of the city, the hostel is a great base to have for exploration of the surroundings. I'm looking for volunteers, artist, handyman and musicians, etc. to help me with daily tasks and also to condition and restore some new rooms for the high season.

Giorgios made me feel at home from the very first day. He was always generous, offering food, access to an electric scooter, and even inviting me to activities outside the volunteering. As a point of improvement, I'd recommend having a basic knowledge of Greek, as he mostly communicates in that language. Work hours were not always clear, and sometimes I was expected to be available during my free time, which made it hard to organize my days. Still, I appreciate his warmth and hospitality.

Valentina is very good at the work she did here. However, it was difficult to communicate with me and the other people who work here because she did not speak English. She should change the information written about English. She was also paid a lot like the other people who knew the job. She wanted to work more. It was her desire to work more hours and her effort was really good. She made a very good effort here and I thank her very much.

I had a great time at the hostel. Giorgios is a very generous and welcoming host. The resturant/bar is very traditional greek with only greek food and on the weekends live greek music in the night. Many of the guests are greek and comes back repetitivly so after a while you get to know them. The work in the resturant consists of mostly cleaning and prepping during the day ( if there isent anything to do in the hostel like clean out rooms, paint etc.) and during the nights with live music you may be asked if you would like to work. The working times are a bit flexible. But would recomend.

My experience as a volunteer at the hostel was wonderful. The host Giorgos is a very good person. The work is not difficult. Giorgos is Greek and his cafe is very popular with local people, so cultural immersion is very easy. The location of the hostel is great for visiting the center on foot. Furthermore, there is a bus nearby if you want to go to other places. My experience was wonderful, I made friends in Greece that I will keep in my heart forever.

Giorgos is a very kind and welcoming host but we had some miscommunication on work hours and with the language barrier.
