The Experience

We're located in the beautiful, peaceful National Park on the South-West tip of the Algarve about 3kms away from Vila do Bispo. We provide a safe haven for animals in our refuge. Volunteers are so important to help feeding and walking the animals; cleaning their areas and houses; photographing them so they can be advertised on social media; generally caring for and spending time with them; maintaining/cleaning our garden area & buildings.

My experience at the shelter was so amazing. Our caravan was great, the work was fun, and the area is beautiful. I highly recommend this to anyone that loves dogs, the outdoors, and meeting new people 😊

I spent two weeks in April at the shelter, and it's by far my favorite Worldpackers experience yet. The work was easy- Feeding the dogs, giving them medication, poop scooping, then showering them with love all day. I met many incredible people, and you really feel like you are making a difference. I slept in a recently remodeled caravan which we got lucky with as it was nicer than what some other volunteers had. It was super comfortable and cozy!!! One thing to note, though, is the “free washing” that's mentioned- it is hand washing in a tub also used for dog blankets. ButI can't wait to go back!!

My stay at the shelter was just what I was looking for, a reconnection with nature and animals. Karen was always quick to help with any problem and even though she has a lot of responsibilities, she always makes time to connect with the volunteers. The volunteers were all so kind and helpful, overall it was my best experience so far!

It was lovely having Zsofia staying and helping us. She worked well within the team, was very friendly, flexible and responsible. She looked after a dog for a while in her caravan too until he went to his new home. Her commitment to the the animals was lovely to see and she looked after the cats too. Come back and see us again sometime Zsofia, you would be very welcome.

My stay at the shelter was amazing! I learned a lot about dog behaviour and fell in love with these lovely animals at the shelter. During my stay in a big Caravan i had a lot of space for myself and everything i needed. The working times were respected and comunicated well, the tasks consisted of feeding and walking the dogs, cleaning the pens and giving lots of cuddles to the dogs. Sometimes some repairing/building tasks were needed. I will definitely miss spending time with the other volunteers, going to the nearby beach or exploring cities around the shelter. Thanks for everything!🐾❤️

Leo is a very happy, friendly, flexible and responsible person. She worked well within the team of volunteers and is a gifted carpenter. She enjoyed being with the animals and her commitment while she was here was greatly appreciated. We will miss you Leo! Enjoy your travels snd come and see us again please.

I spend 3 weeks at the shelter in a rlly cozy caravan, the work was okay, not to hard, and the dogs soo cute, if u have to wash your clothes there is a bath tub. For me it was after a time bit difficult without a car... there are bikes but you have to be sporty for them if u need groceries for example xd
