Description
We are a dedicated animal sanctuary run entirely by full-time volunteers. As a non-profit organisation, we rely on donations to sustain our mission of rescuing and caring for animals. While every contribution directly supports the animals, we ask volunteers for a contribution to cover their own food and supplies during their stay. This helps us keep our resources focused on giving the animals the love and care they deserve.

- Have some time off for yourself, go explore the city or rest for a while.

- You will have a bed in a private room. In other words, a room just for you.
- Shared Dorm
- You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

- You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

- You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.
- Dinner
- You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.
- Fast Internet Access
- High-speed internet for you to work remotely

- Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.
- Pick Up
- We will pick you up when you arrive, and take you to our property.

- Get a certificate of completion after you finish your experience.

The Experience
We are a vegan animal sanctuary in Coimbra, dedicated to rescuing and caring for abandoned and abused farm animals. Our sanctuary is home to many wonderful souls, and during your stay, you'll have the chance to meet them all! 🐷 🐴 🐶 🐔 🐱 Each day, you'll connect with the animals, learn about their unique personalities, and enjoy plenty of cuddles with those who seek it. 💚

Chiara and the team at O Projecto the shelter are inspiring in how tirelessly and passionately they care for the animals in the shelter. They truly love every single rescued individual and go above and beyond every day to care for them, no matter what. I had a great time volunteering - sometimes the work was intense but it always felt rewarding, I learned so much and being with the animals was fantastic. I would recommend volunteering at O Projecto the shelter to vegans and non vegans alike.

My volunteering time here was truly meaningful and enriching. Working with the animals was so much joy , and after a few days I felt comfortable with the daily routine. Chiara is incredibly kind and always there when you need her, and everyone made me feel welcome and part of the community. The location is perfect for combining volunteering with discovering Portugal, with time to rest or explore even on working days. A very special detail is the little pig living in the volunteer house—absolutely adorable and guaranteed to make you smile every day. I would love to come back one day. :))

We met a lot of amazing humans and animals here and got to learn so much about the importance of sanctuaries! Even though both of us are the shelter, we gained a whole different appreciation for veganism as a movement. The work is very hands-on and the hours are respected. There's a possibility your days off are not always together if you apply as a couple. The scheduling is done per week, meaning sometimes you have to work for more than 5 days in a row, depending on your arrival day. Other than this it is a wonderful experience that we think is so important, and we wish everyone there the best :)

This project was our first volunteer experience, and there couldn't have been a better place for it. Chiara and the others gave us a very warm welcome, and we immediately felt at home. Even though the team's daily work was sometimes stressful, and they had a lot to take care of, they never took it out on us. The work these people do every day and the energy they put into the animals' well-being is simply awesome and makes the whole experience incredibly inspiring. Thanks again to everyone for making this possible; we highly recommend this project!☺️

Working with the animals at the shelter was an incredible experience, when you're with them, they're the only thing on your mind, and they fill you with peace!! The hosts were very welcoming and cooked amazing Italian meals every day :) I already miss all the little animals so much, and I'm really grateful for the time I spent there
