The Experience

In the idyllic Swedish village of Stjärnsund, Fridhems Holistic Course Centre’s beloved Diversity Garden and extended land will be refreshed and prepared for the arrival of summer. This includes working with an experienced garden group rooted in permaculture, many basic and vital tasks such as cutting grass, preparing garden beds, and fencing fruit bushes and trees as well as cleaning up behind our workshop to make ready for sheep stalls.

The best 2 weeks I've ever had. The place is magical and the people there are just great. Everyone welcomed me straight away and made me feel like at home. I worked independently and could decide individually when I wanted to start. It was all very organised and had enough time for myself. I would recommend everyone to go there!!

I stayed in this village called Stjärnsund for 2 weeks. It's a small peaceful village where people live with beautiful nature. Walking literally took three minutes to get to a forest, which refreshed my soul and body. During my stay, I painted and repaired doors, cleaned the building, and gave other general assistance as needed. Working hour was very flexible. You are able to think independently and work flexibly. People here were so nice, which was the best part of my stay. I will definitely come back here!

My experience was incredible!! Everyone welcomed me very well and did everything they could to make me feel welcome. All the people here are very kind and nice. It is a village where the entire community helps each other and contributes to having good experiences. I really recommend this volunteering and it was one of the best experiences I've had in my life.

I didn't have any luck with my first host. Almost everyone was correct in their treatment but I felt alone. There wasn't much work to do, I moved a door and organized the storage. The days were long and a little boring. No one except Johannes, a great person, approached me and invited me to get to know the place a little. In general they expect you to integrate yourself and ask everything. I have something to say regarding the center's director, Stephan. I didn't like his behavior towards me, I felt harassed and mistreated. Other boys warned me that he was not a pleasant person to deal

Juan, unfortunately, had great difficulties communicating with all of us here. We've learned some valuable things from this experience however which hopefully will allow us to avoid the misunderstandings that occurred in future.

It turned out that Juan had gotten the impression that this was a job, and that we were here to provide food money and accommodation in return. This led to an unfortunate situation where, instead of him coming and showing interest in our project, he was quite demanding regarding his accommodation from the very start and started to ask for more money than what we had agreed.

It soon became clear that his English is not very good so we arranged for a couple of Spanish-speaking community members to work with him instead. That seemed to go well for a while.

However he then decided, without checking with us, to stay until Christmas. He was not at all happy when we pointed out that he had not discussed this with us first. To top it off he had simply not understood some comments that had been made in a meeting that had absolutely nothing to do with him and which he had interpreted as criticism.

Instead of coming to us and sorting it out he said nothing and then, after four days, had an emotional outburst. He did seem to understand after detailed explanation of what was said, that he had created a drama based in his own lack of English but decided to leave shortly after that. He then left the job that he started half done despite having promised to finish it.

This is the first time we have had an experience like this (and we've had hundreds of volunteers over the years). We'll make very sure in future that our volunteers have sufficient language skills to communicate with us and that they understand that is a volunteer position, not a job.

We wish Juan the best however.
