The Experience

It is now low season on our little island. That means we are only open 1 week a month for Full Moon Party. we only need help the two days before Full Moon and the day of. we have a second hostel that is about 15 mins away on a scooter. Once a week we would ask that you lead a small bike tour of the island. Show people a waterfall, a beach, maybe a temple or a viewpoint. In return you can stay as long as you would like. Super easy!!

Unfortunately I had to leave the hostel earlier than expected. My time at the hostel wasn't so bad, the main problem is that the hostel doesn't have much structure to support the volunteers it has...it doesn't have a kitchen, nor a water filter. Due to this problem together, I had to leave. Unfortunately I didn't have any kind of understanding from the owner, on the same day I communicated with him about my wish to leave earlier, he sent me and all the other volunteers away the day after, without a notice. I apologize for leaving earlier than agreed, I wish you all the best.

Laura,

I don’t know what you mean when you say you didn’t feel supported. You had several days of training, you had lists that should you what to do in each situation that even explained button by button what to use in the system and I was always available 24hrs a day if you had any questions.

You did not have to leave. You chose to leave and go volunteer at another hostel on the same island.

Yes we do not have a kitchen or filtered water. Neither were promised to you and in fact I make sure before everyone makes a commitment to us that they understand that there is no food or kitchen. No hostel on this island except my other small hostel offers free filtered water.

When someone makes a commitment and decide for whatever reason to cut it short and leave the team short staffed, why would I let you stay for free for any length of time? You broke one of the terms of the contract that you signed with us and as a result you were asked to leave. It just happens that all the volunteers for various reasons broke their contracts at the same time and were also asked to leave.

I’m sorry you chose to break our contract as you were quite pleasant to work with.

Best of luck

It was my first volunteering experience through Worldpackers. I learned a lot about how the world works. It was challenging at times, but overall, it was a good volunteering experience.

I had a great time at the hostel – Brian is a funny and helpful guy. It's a fantastic location if you're into parties. I'd recommend it to people who can ride a scooter because without one, the Haad Rin area might get boring quickly. But, you'll have plenty of time to explore the island. The only issue for me was how we parted ways; I felt punished for the other volunteers' mistakes. I had to leave the hotel without any notice, which I found disrespectful. Apart from that, it was a positive experience, and I have lots of nice memories.

I’m sorry you felt disrespected. As I said, I thought you did a great job. Unfortunately you chose to end our agreement early so I asked you to leave with the others. I feel if someone doesn’t want to be there and fulfill their obligations then I don’t want them around my guests. Whatever the reason you chose to leave early doesn’t matter. I had schedules done and your decision affected my business. I wish you nothing but the best in the future and I hope you take this experience with you and maybe learn from it.
