I had the privilege of volunteering with Emmaus ( in Canecas and Lisbon) and it was one of the most enriching and fulfilling experiences. The community's mission is to support those in need through sustainable projects and social initiatives, and it was incredible to be part of something so meaningful. Daily tasks were varied, including helping with the shop, sorting donations, and assisting in the kitchen, among other duties. The team and the other volunteers were very welcoming, and there was a strong sense of working together for a common good. There was a family atmosphere 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

My experience at the organization was amazing. At first I was staying for 3 weeks, but spent 5 weeks there because of the incredible atmosphere. The hosts are really nice people. I spent time with them, shared many things and learned a lot as well. While staying in the community in Caneças you have the oportunity to live together with all the people, and the pop up in Lisbon enables you to see another part of the movement. They also host many enjoyable events there. Thank you very much for this experience. Hope to see you soon.

My time at Emmaus was an incredible experience. The people were unique and you learned different ways of seeing life and what surrounds you. Ophelie, Eva, Humberto and all the volunteers were incredible and helped me with everything. I would 100% recommend this experience, spending time in Caneças and another time in Lisbon. The energy and desire to help and enjoy life was the best part of my experience, thank you for everything🫶🏼

I really enjoyed it. these two weeks were slow and calm, but at the same time fast and super fun. as we are just a few volunteers, we connect with everyone and that makes it very special. thank you Eva for your energy, it's super inspiringgg. highly recommended if you are starting to learn Portuguese, as you can talk to the companions and learn things from them. i recommend it!! and I hope to return:)

This was my first ever volunteering experience and it was amazing!! I spent two weeks at the Camp in Caneças and after that one week in Lisbon. Eva, Julia, Ophélie, and Humperto are very warm and welcoming people. I felt at home super quickly and loved talking to them!!! We did various tasks at the camp and got a great look at how the Organisation works. Emmaus was a truly inspiring and mesmerizing experience - I met the nicest, funniest, and loveliest people and made unforgettable memories!!

This experience was really fun and unique - would reccomend as an immersive, local and social opportunity in Portugal. Work varied daily, involving the antiques/donations stored on site (sorting, cleaning etc). Some work was with the Portuguese speaking companions (locals who live on site) so having a translator around can be handy! Accommodation + work is at the organization commune in Caneças, around one hour from Lisbon by public transport, or a 25 minute drive. Uber can be super cheap between a few. The volunteer group made the experience for me, Eva is a lovely person and so much fun!

Our stay has been divided one week in Caneças and the other one in the store Pop Up, so we had kinda a 360° view of how the association works, and it has been sooo good and interesting. Ophélie, Humberto and Eva, the people that coordinate everything, are really admirable for the dedication that they put on this project, more that that they are kind and comprehensive, you'll feel immediately at home there. I really suggest in general this experience because I couldn't find negative sides, you'll be helping for a good cause, be able to learn Portuguese if you want, and having the time to visit

Emmaus was my first volunteering experience and it taught me a lot about staying with international volunteers, helping adults and elderly people, generally communicate and get connections with people that have different routines. In my opinion, it's a precious occasion to start with worldpackers and have an immersion with locals!

I definitely learned, enjoyed, and grew up through this experience, by interacting with people from different backgrounds and cultures. They have two different bases in Lisboa, Portugal, the one is community in Caneças where volunteers and local people live together and the other is a pop-up store in the middle of Lisbon. Each has their own features that make you excited and motivated! Besides the volunteering environments they provide, people in the organization Caneças were also incomparably nice. You'll see what I mean as soon as you meet them in person!
