Volunteering at the Vibrant Hostel in Georgetown, Penang - Malaysia🏝️

I left the hostel after 4 days due to personal reasons but just to share my experience, I was assigned evening reception duties, including guest check-ins and check-outs. However, I noticed that volunteers also handle tasks like laundry, outdoor activities, and organizing dining outs. Also, I was told I'd assist regular staff, but most tasks, including closing the day's accounts, are led by volunteers. Additionally, the Staff House has a kitchen, living room, and large communal space. But the room is shared by 10-12 people, so if cleanliness or sleep quality matters, consider the other option.

I appreciated the opportunity to volunteer, but my experience had some challenges. The environment often felt like full time work due to lack of staff support, making the workload intense. Additionally, there were moments that felt uncomfortable due to signs of micro-aggressions, and when i raised these concerns, I didn't feel they were addressed with consideration. Sharing a room with 11 others was also a bit of a stretch in terms of comfort. I believe this placement would benefit from clearer expectations around workload and a more respectful, inclusive approach to cultural differences.

I had a good experience thanks to the people that i meet through the mission. I recommend this place for this, as it is easy to meet people. The accomodation provided is okay, you live in the same house as the owners of the hostel. The room for the volunteers is a bit small for 12 persons, and it can be hard to sleep if you have the wrong bed The management can be friendly, but I feel like we were treated too much like paid staff, like we're just here to work for them. I whished for a more equal to equal experience, just people helping people, for us, the accomodation, for them, their project

This is a highly the hostel environment where you can party and meet other travellers! The work felt more like a job then volunteering on Reception; you will carry cash-handling responsibilities and you can work up to 36 hours a week. If you are happy with this like I was, there are many perks! The co-managers of the hostel need to improve upon their sociability and friendliness towards volunteers. They facilitated a lot of drama amongst team members. You live in their home, which did not feel appropriate at times due to the interpersonal dramas occurring.
