The work is pretty easy and the manager is very laid back and chill. The hostel itself is comfortable and there's plenty of common areas to relax. Matala is a small town and there isn't much to do, so it's great place if you enjoy lazy days and relaxing!

I had a very positive experience volunteering in Matala. I was on the morning shift, helping the cleaning lady with housekeeping tasks. It was a nice balance between helping out and having free time to enjoy the island. The location is just a few minutes' walk from the beach, restaurants, bars, and a supermarket. One of the highlights of the experience were the pizza nights, where our manager Adam would cook amazing homemade pizzas :)

The tasks are simple, schedules and duties are respected. Mátala is a village with a hippie style, beautiful and very peaceful. I appreciate the opportunity and also the kindness of the host.

First of all pay attention to each position you are applying: Heraklion or Matala. Matala is a very small hippie village, good for people who want to get away from big cities, nature is stunning!! I spent the month of April there so the season was just beginning. It was super calm, not busy or crowded. There are just 2 small supermarkets and they are quite expensive, go prepared. Or go to Lidl in Moires. The shifts were easy and we had flexible schedules. Bedroom is good. Adam, the manager, is a nice guy, but we could notice he lacked some experience and leadership. Overall it was good.

My expirience at Matala Hostel was positive, I was there during the month of April, just before the season starts. The pre-season is really calm and there's not many people around, so is really good if you're more into a chill enviroment. Matala village is really nice but quite small, so have in mind that you will be far from big cities. Sometimes i felt there was a little bit of a lack of leadership and the activities that were organized for the guests were not really well planed and it kinda depends on the volunteers to make them happen even if you're off shift. If you go: go to red beach :)
