YHA London St Paul's

Located right next to St Paul's Cathedral, this is a great place to center yourself in London and go out exploring. We offer flexibility in working to let you make the most of it, and you get the opportunity to experience this with other volunteers. If you want to have the freedom to go out and do your own exploring (with other volunteers as well), this is a great choice for you!

We treat volunteers fairly and with respect. We just want the same in return. The best scenario we always want to work towards, is getting a great experience for our volunteers and much needed help for ourselves. A key target we always work towards is getting return volunteers (we have been steadily getting more and more return volunteers, some of them on their 4th stay with us!), as this lets us know that they valued and enjoyed their experience.

Volunteering at the hostel was a good experience overall and I’d do it again.
The work was a bit demanding but manageable, and I met some great people.
The biggest downside was the heat — the building has no A/C and it gets extremely hot in summer.
Also, even when we finished tasks early, we had to stay until the end of the shift doing nothing, which felt a bit unfair.
Still, I’m grateful for the experience!

Por motivos personales tuve que irme muy pronto del lugar, pero fueron muy amables y Peny (la encargada de los voluntarios) es una gran persona, muy atenta y comprensiva.

I appreciate the opportunity to collaborate. However, there was poor communication from the reception staff, who expected volunteers to know rules that had not been explained and reacted with reprimands. I also had to work while sick, which I found inappropriate. It would be important to improve the clarity of information and the treatment of volunteers for future experiences.
Thank you.

St Paul's replied

Hi Yender, I am sorry you had a negative experience while staying with us. If you could send me an email with specific examples, I can discuss them with the team, to ensure it won't happen again. During your induction it's been mentioned to you, that if you are sick you can tell Reception before your shifts has started. I am not sure to which occasion you are referring, but if you could provide more information, I'd be happy to address that too. Kind regards, Peny - Duty Manager

It was my first volunteering experience and I really enjoyed it. The tasks were easy, the hours flexible, and the location perfect to explore London. Everything was clear from the start and they explained the work well. The staff and volunteers were nice, and I met really good people. It was also a good way to practice my English. The room was very hot at night and there wasn’t much cold water, but overall it was a great experience. I recommend it if you want to be in a big city and meet good people.
