Sukia Hostel

Our hostel is located in Drake Bay and it´is surrounded by jungle, living a few days here is a guarantee of being able to observe the wildlife of Costa Rica.
To be a volunteer here is to take advantage of this setting in a serene and friendly atmosphere.

I am the owner of Sukia Travel and Sukia Hostel, this space is made so that travelers can rest after their excursions while staying close to nature to recharge their batteries. We currently have 2 to 3 people working full time. Being a volunteer at sukia hostel means being an integral part of our team while sharing the local pura vida.

⚠️ Management changed. You will not have the same experience old volunteers did ⚠️
There was no team or staff, just a cleaner a few hours weekly. Hours were unclear and I was pressured to work more than agreed. The restaurant is sublet and I was dragged into fights over who paid for toilet paper and soap for the shared bathroom. A tour guide was kicked out due to an incident with an old volunteer. This was never disclosed to me. I lived with him for days and was made to supervise his departure alone. They had a broken water filter and knew it, but had volunteers drink unsafe water for days.

Hi Luz—thanks for sharing. We ended the exchange two weeks early due to ongoing frictions with other volunteers and staff; we prioritize a respectful team environment. After we communicated this, you threatened to leave a negative review, so we don’t believe this comment is objective. Management has not changed. We invite readers to check our other reviews—especially from volunteers who overlapped with Luz—for a balanced view. We wish her well.

I had a great time at Sukia! Everyone was respectful and friendly. Thank you for having me and making me feel so included. Staying in the jungle was fantastic as you see new animals all the time and really connect with nature.

I had a good time at Sukia Hostel in Drake Bay. The location is really beautiful, it is perfect to immerse yourself in nature. I had time to explore the area, to meet locals and I was able to do amazing tours to the national park. When I arrived the hostel was a bit disorganized because the old manager just left and there was no structure for the volunteers, nevertheless we managed the situation. The hours were fair and the tasks easy for me to do. I recommend volunteering here if you are self organized and maybe already have some experience working at a hostel.
