Soma Kwa Furaha Initiative (SKFI)

Soma Kwa Furaha is a Swahili phrase meaning “Read with Joy.” It reflects our belief that learning should be approached with happiness, enthusiasm, and a genuine sense of fulfilment. We promote the idea that education should be an enjoyable and empowering experience for every child. The Soma Kwa Furaha Initiative (SKFI) was founded with the vision of creating a society where every vulnerable child, including those with special needs, has equal access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities to thrive in a safe and inclusive environment.

Based in Mwanza, the heart of Tanzania’s beautiful Lake Zone region, SKFI offers volunteers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of vulnerable children, particularly those with special needs. Our programs focus on promoting inclusive education, advocating for children’s rights, improving access to child healthcare, promoting gender equality, and economically empowering families with vulnerable children. All of these efforts aim to build a more inclusive, compassionate, and self-reliant community.

Volunteering with us means joining a passionate team dedicated to helping children thrive, regardless of their background or abilities. You will work directly with local families, teachers, and caregivers, contributing to educational workshops, play-based learning, nutrition programs, and women-led initiatives.

Mwanza is the second-largest city in Tanzania and is situated along the scenic shores of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Known for its warm hospitality, rich Sukuma culture, and breathtaking landscapes, Mwanza offers a safe and vibrant environment for volunteers. It is the ideal location for those seeking both purpose and adventure—whether exploring rocky hills, visiting fishing communities, or participating in cultural events.

By volunteering with SKFI, you’re not just giving your time; you’re becoming part of a growing movement that believes every child, regardless of ability or status, deserves a joyful, safe, and supportive environment in which to reach their full potential.

At the end of your volunteering experience, we offer the following awards:
1. Certificate of Appreciation
2. Certificate of Volunteering
3. Volunteering Recommendation Letter (upon request)

My name is Micky Millian, and I am a co-founder and program manager at the Soma Kwa Furaha Initiative (SKFI) in Mwanza, Tanzania. As a development practitioner and social worker, I am dedicated to fostering inclusive environments where all children, especially those with special needs, can learn, thrive, and feel valued. With over five years of experience in community empowerment, I coordinate our programs focused on education, health, and gender equality. Our team may be small, but we are highly dedicated. It consists of educators, caregivers, volunteers, and youth leaders who work closely with families and schools in the Lake Zone region. We strongly believe in collaboration, kindness, and hands-on learning. Everyone who joins our team, whether for a short time or the long term, becomes part of our family. We support our volunteers by guiding and encouraging them to share their skills and ideas. At SKFI, our goal is to create a warm, safe, and inspiring environment for both our beneficiaries and our team. Whether you are assisting with early childhood education, organising community awareness events, or providing creative skills training, your contributions are genuinely valued. You will leave with meaningful memories and friendships valued. You will leave with meaningful memories and friendships.

Working at SKFI was a life-changing experience. Micky, David, Gervas, and Dr. Idda all made me feel safe, appreciated, and comfortable. I got to meet many different people with lots of different experiences and ended up having a great time after I had a tough transition to the Tanzanian lifestyle. I wouldn’t have had such a great experience without them and got to talk to them about so many different topics.

My host mom, Bibi, helped me feel well taken care of and made me authentic, delicious Tanzanian food. She became like a grandmother figure in my life and we have a strong connection now!

I had and excellent experience with all the staff memebers. Micky was incredible welcoming and always on the top of everything I needed. David was fantastic co-lead in the empowerment workshops. Even when things got tough we always ended the day laughing.
Staying with my host family was wonderful. Bibi made me feel like part of the family, treating me like on of her granddaughters and always checking on me. I learned so much about the local culture and cuisine. Volunteering with Soma kwa furaha was a great experience. They are doing a wonderful job in the community:)
