Omah Sinau Gesang (OSG) envisions a sustainable community fostered through permaculture and creative education at its eco-farm and creative space. Our mission is to cultivate critical thinking and curiousity among the youth, empowering them to cherish the natural environment for their own well-being and to foster inclusivity, climate resilience, and sustainability within their community. Located in Lumajang, East Java, Omah Sinau (OSG) translated to "a home.of life learninf." Covering an area of 1.790.90 square kilometers with a population of 1.104.759 (as of June 2016), Lumajang boast abundant natural resources, including 31 rivers, 56 waterfalls, and the towering Semeru volcano. The region's fertile land yields rice, bananas, vegetables, and fresh goat milk, while its artisans craft jewellery renowned worldwide. Despite this natural wealth, many residenta face challenges, evidenced by high rates of child stunting (23.8% in 2022), child marriage, and poverty, coupled with a low human resource index ranking (35 out of 38 regencies in East Java). Aligned with the vision of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, OSG eco-farm pioneers sustainable, chemical-free agriculture practices to engage younger generations in farming. By employing permaculture principles, we enhance soil quality over time, boosting productivity without reliance on costly chemical fertilizers. In contrast to conventional farming methods, which degrade soil and inflate costs, our approach promotes long-term sustainability and productivity Completing the eco-farm, OSG creative space hosta workshops and events to educate the community on nutrition, sustainable living, and climate resilience. Wow, where to begin! I have had the most incredible experience at OSG. In only such a short space of time I feel like I have experienced and learnt so much. This volunteering experience so impactful and so fun but I have also found my family in Indonesia 🫶🏽 Asih was kind, humble, loving and incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. She made delicious food and shared stories and goals with us. Haidar was with us every day, taking us to the village to experience fun activities such (tofu making, day trip to the waterfall). What a wonderful family, I’ll remember my time here forever. Thank you OSG💗

I had the best experience with OSG. We were there to celebrate their Independence Day and helped them set up the event. On the day we were able to meet all the locals and help anyone who wanted to practice their English, and they gave us the opportunity to really get involved and we felt truly accepted by every single person there. Asih’s hospitality is unmatched and her cooking even better. You will definitely not be leaving this experience hungry! Her family are so welcoming and her son Haidar even offers tours to all the surrounding attractions for a very good price. Thank you OSG 🫶🏼

I had a life-changing experience. The locals are very friendly and eager to learn. Something important to keep in mind is that if you want to have a good experience, curiosity must be one of your strengths. Speaking with the host, I told her I’d like to learn as much as I could, so she taught me how to make donuts, about permaculture, and a little bit about gardening. The project is still taking shape, but they have a clear objective.
Everyone made me feel very welcome, and I’m grateful for all the attention.

I have mixed feelings. The moments I spent with the children and young people were truly wonderful their joy and sincerity touched my heart deeply. However, I felt there could be more organization and planning in the project. On a couple of occasions, I had to cover the cost of materials for activities myself, which made me wonder how the contributions from volunteers are allocated. I believe the project could benefit from having a clearer structure and purpose for volunteers, so that the time spent here is more directly connected to the proyecto instead of and income and tourist porpoise

I'm sorry to hear that the experience is not exactly what you hoped. We are always looking to improve, of course, so I can elaborate more on the situation. In reality, the meaningful experience you had with local children and youth wouldn't have possible without the existence of this organization and the voluntary work we've put in to make it happen. It's only fair that any appreciation for the experience also acknowledges the role of the organization behind it.

I had a great experience with OSG! It was a beautiful opportunity to meet other volunteers from around the world and connect with the local people. One of the highlights was visiting local schools and spending time with the kids — such a joyful and meaningful experience. Outside of volunteering, I also joined an amazing tour organized by OSG to Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and the stunning black sand beach. Every moment was unforgettable. Thank you so much, OSG, for the wonderful memories and for creating a space for connection, culture, and adventure.
