O Projeto Riza , Vegan Animal Sanctuary .

Hello, and welcome! My name is Chiara, and I’ll be your host. I’m a full-time volunteer at our animal sanctuary, nestled in the historic city of Coimbra.

Our project is dedicated to rescuing farm animals and giving them the love, care, and dignity they deserve. At the moment, our sanctuary is home to a wonderful family of animals, including 5 pigs, 1 donkey, 10 goats, 5 sheep, 156chickens, 6 cats, and 2 dogs.

As a sanctuary, one of our core principles is to honour the lives we protect, so we kindly ask that only vegan food is brought or consumed within the sanctuary and the house.

Coimbra itself is a UNESCO World Heritage city, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. You’ll find nearby beaches, rivers, hiking trails, and plenty of other hidden gems to explore during your stay.

We’re thrilled to have you here and can’t wait to share this special place with you!

Volunteers will actively engage in the daily care of our animals, with tasks that include feeding, cuddling, and cleaning their stables. You may also take part in additional projects like building compost boxes, setting up fences, and more. A typical volunteer day might look like this: - **8:30 AM:** Start the day by feeding all the animals. - **10:30 AM:** Clean the stables to keep the animals’ environment safe and comfortable. - **11:30 AM:** Take a well-earned break and head back home. - **4:00–5:30 PM:** Return to the sanctuary for evening feedings and final clean-ups for the day. Every day is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while connecting with these amazing animals!

Chiara and the team at O Projecto Riza are inspiring in how tirelessly and passionately they care for the animals in the sanctuary. They truly love every single rescued individual and go above and beyond every day to care for them, no matter what. I had a great time volunteering - sometimes the work was intense but it always felt rewarding, I learned so much and being with the animals was fantastic. I would recommend volunteering at O Projecto Riza to vegans and non vegans alike.

My volunteering time here was truly meaningful and enriching. Working with the animals was so much joy , and after a few days I felt comfortable with the daily routine. Chiara is incredibly kind and always there when you need her, and everyone made me feel welcome and part of the community. The location is perfect for combining volunteering with discovering Portugal, with time to rest or explore even on working days. A very special detail is the little pig living in the volunteer house—absolutely adorable and guaranteed to make you smile every day. I would love to come back one day. :))

We met a lot of amazing humans and animals here and got to learn so much about the importance of sanctuaries! Even though both of us are vegan, we gained a whole different appreciation for veganism as a movement. The work is very hands-on and the hours are respected. There’s a possibility your days off are not always together if you apply as a couple. The scheduling is done per week, meaning sometimes you have to work for more than 5 days in a row, depending on your arrival day. Other than this it is a wonderful experience that we think is so important, and we wish everyone there the best :)

Volunteering at the O Projeto Riza was truly a unique experience. As someone who is not that in touch with animals, it felt great to go out of my comfort zone for a bit and try something different.
The opportunity to help rescued animals and help people who are genuinely trying to do something good feels very fulfilling. The animals are lovely, even tho they can be difficult at times.
Lastly, to be frank, the work is tiring, it can feel overwhelming or irritating at times, and requires effort, both mentally and physically. Due to the nature of the work, sometimes the hours can vary.

This project was our first volunteer experience, and there couldn't have been a better place for it. Chiara and the others gave us a very warm welcome, and we immediately felt at home. Even though the team's daily work was sometimes stressful, and they had a lot to take care of, they never took it out on us. The work these people do every day and the energy they put into the animals' well-being is simply awesome and makes the whole experience incredibly inspiring.

Thanks again to everyone for making this possible; we highly recommend this project!☺️
