Miyajima Guesthouse Mikuniya

Come and join our team!

In our guesthouse, we need helpers to do either cleaning, cooking dinner, reception, or night duties for about 5 days/week depending on whether they can speak Japanese or not.
If you want to help in another field, such as creating videos or advertisements on social media, that would be incredible. Accommodation is across the road from the guesthouse, and you will be sharing with other travellers like yourself. A shared kitchen, and free WiFi are provided.

Hello, my name is Junya and I was born in Hiroshima. I have run this guesthouse since 2013. I love travel, and have visited France, Spain, South Korea, and China. I can speak Japanese and English. During COVID, the customers were mainly Japanese, but as soon as the borders opened, lots of foreign customers came back. Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant Torii gate. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island. The island can be reached by ferry [one every 5/10 minutes from 8AM to 6PM, first at 6:25 and last at 22:42] . The main part of the island is accessible by walking or biking but you can also come with your car [extra fees for bike/car for the ferry’s fare]. There are nice hikes to do around the island with a wonderful view of the west of Hiroshima Prefecture. You will see small waterfalls, shrines and wild animal such as deer, weasel or tanuki if you’re lucky enough. Due to recent events in Japan, we can only accept volunteers who have a valid Working Holiday Visa or Students Visa. This is a requirement by law and unfortunately we cannot change it. If you have a Working Holiday Visa, then please get in touch. We would love to meet you and work together.

This was my 3rd volunteering experience in Japan and the best one. Host and other volunteers were very welcoming. I am very happy that Junya accepted me only with housekeeping experience, so I could learn a lot about working in a kitchen and reception. The place is very cozy and there is much hikes to do in the island. Also, plenty of time to visit cities near by. Time in Mikunya flew very fast for me and I hope I can visit it one day again! Best recommendations! 🫶🏻

Beautiful island and guesthouse. It was leading up to busy season so there were a lot of staff there which was good. You get various tasks so the work doesn’t get boring and it is 3 days on 1 day off. The staff all eat together and stay in a seperate house away from where guests stay. I really enjoyed my time at Mikuniya, thank you so much!!

I really enjoyed my stay through Worldpackers. Junya-san is very friendly and easy to connect with. The tasks were simple and not too demanding, which gave me lots of time to explore Miyajima and relax. Overall, a fun and stress-free experience I’d gladly recommend :)

We had an absolutely incredible month at Mikuniya and couldn’t recommend it enough. The host Junya and the adorable cat Miku-chan were so welcoming, and Junya is flexible to make sure you get to do everything you want to. We had a great time hiking the mountain and exploring the town and the coast. Hiroshima is really close so day trips are super easy too! The work is just as described and there are always clear instructions, and it feels like a very fair trade for accomodation in such a unique place plus TWO meals a day! We found a real sense of family with Junya and the other volunteers ♡

This was my first volunteer experience and I loved everything about it.
The host Junya-san and everyone else were super nice and welcoming. They answered every question and guided me in my first days.
Work never feels too exhausting, since you always have enough time to relax before or after your shift, in addition the days off are always refreshing.
In this guest house you’ll never feel forgotten or missed since there’re always prologue around you who are always up to for a good chat.
All in all I would recommend volunteering here, especially if it’s your first time.
