Kombucha Microbrewery
If you're looking to slow down, take a break from fast travelling, and live more like a local in Langkawi — we’re a good match.
We’re a small, family-run sustainable kombucha microbrewery based in Langkawi, Malaysia — an island that still offers spaces away from mass tourism. Our project supports a more sustainable beverage alternative and works closely with local farmers, restaurant/cafe/shop owners, and the luxury hospitality industry. By joining us, you’re contributing to a grassroots F&B initiative that values transparency, environmental awareness, and genuine community connection.
You’ll learn our complete kombucha recipe from start to finish, gaining hands-on fermentation knowledge and insight into how a small seasonal business operates within an island economy and hospitality environment. This is practical, real-world learning you can take with you anywhere.
Working hours are short and focused — 3 to 4 hours per day. If tasks are completed efficiently, the rest of the day is yours. Some days are lighter than others. That means space to get on your scooter and explore, swim, read, cook your own meals, spend time in nature, or simply enjoy the slower rhythm of island life.
Accommodation is in a comfortable ground-floor apartment in Kuah town, close to supermarkets, local food, cafés, and daily conveniences. The apartment has a shared dorm-style room with a shared bathroom, as well as a private queen bedroom with its own bathroom and balcony, usually prioritised for long-term volunteers, couples, or staff. There is a kitchen with basic equipment and Malaysian spices so you can cook your own meals, and the apartment complex includes a swimming pool for relaxing on quiet afternoons.
A motorbike is highly recommended for getting around the island, and we can help arrange a rental before you arrive. Our home and microbrewery are just a short ride away.
This experience suits travelers who want:

I’m Syed, and together with my wife Laurine, we run a small, self-financed kombucha microbrewery built from the ground up. It started as a part-time passion project and naturally grew over the years — these days it feels almost full-time during high season, and slower and more flexible when the island quiets down.
Outside of brewing, we both juggle other work. I perform music professionally, take on occasional odd jobs, and freelance as a nature guide, sharing Langkawi’s wildlife, plants, and geology with travellers. Laurine teaches French online and works on translation projects. Our lifestyle is varied and independent, shaped by the rhythms of the island.
For fun, we enjoy organising small meetups, island trips, beach barbecues, and spontaneous cookouts. I love cooking and sharing local dishes, and Laurine brings her own energy — she enjoys dancing, tai chi, waterfall visits, and staying active. Life around us is usually a mix of fermentation, music, food, movement, and a bit of island spontaneity.
The microbrewery itself is hands-on and seasonal. During quieter months, we often manage production ourselves, sometimes bringing in part-timers when needed. In high season, a few seasonal local staff support production and deliveries. Hosting volunteers is something we choose to do because we enjoy cultural exchange and sharing a more grounded side of Langkawi beyond mass tourism.
We’re informal and approachable, but we care about doing things properly. We take time to show you how things are done and provide simple guides and checklists, especially during the kombucha workshops. The work is practical and straightforward.
Volunteers can expect clear communication, realistic working hours (3–4 hours per day), and respect for their independence and personal space. When tasks are completed well, the rest of the day is yours.
Overall, it’s structured when it comes to work and relaxed when it comes to lifestyle — a chance to experience everyday Langkawi in a genuine way.
