My time at the shelter and Cascada Verde was amazing. You work more hours at the shelter but never go over the signed up for hours. Both the hosts are so welcoming, friendly and really care about their work. The whole experience was incredible. Caring for the cats was fun, relaxing and very fulfilling whenever one gets adopted or showed improvement in socialising, I miss them already. The work at the hostel allowed me to meet many travellers and it is right in the forest where you can see wildlife such as monkeys whilst having a the shelter in the morning. I couldn't recommend this highly enough!

Mi experiencia fue muy linda y enriquezedora! compartí con gente muy amable, super atenta y predispuesta, desde los voluntarios hasta los coordinadores del voluntariado. Me gustó mucho participar de las actividades que organizaban dónde se fomentaba el rescate de animales y se informaba sobre el cuidado y la adopción de las mascotas. Yo aprendí mucho y volvería a vivir la experiencia, súper recomiendo 🫶🏽 Personas con ganas de compartir conocimiento y recibirlo también! 🩵

La experiencia no fue buena. Ya el problema arranca cuando te enteras de que hay dos anfitrionas y tenes que trabajar en dos lugares, el coffe el refugio y el hostel donde te hospedas(nos dieron para dormir colchones en un altillo de 1.20 de altura). A nosotros nos echaron al cuarto día de voluntariado por falta de comunicación entre las anfitrionas (una nos dijo que podíamos hacer algo y la otra no), de un día para el otro nos dijeron que nos fuéramos sin dar a pie a charlar sobre el malentendido que hubo. Además de vivir una situación horrible e incómoda en todo sentido. No lo recomiendo para nada

I would like to point out the truths of what happened and further explain your review. Firstly, you used all the food items bought for volunteers in the hostel without asking and made food to sell to them. You used all of their food items and then had the audacity to ask them to pay you for it! In Costa Rica it is illegal to prepare food without a food handling carnet and illegal to sell/ work without a residency card. You committed 2 offenses in the country and in the hostel and when asked about it you refused to replace all the food/ products you used and stated World Packers and myself gave you permission. Neither WP nor myslef would give you that permission as it is illegal. In the 5 days you spent with us you did not complete your hours and was even given a single room with a private bathroom to make your Stay more comfortable. We held up our commitment to both of you and offered you housing and food and truthful exchange program. But in return you stole items that did not belong to you and tried to run an illegal business out of the hostel. I am sorry the both of you chose these behaviors and we had to respond by termination. I hope you are more responsible, honest and law- abiding in your future exchanges.

Sinceramente no recomiendo esta experiencia para nada, las anfitrionas (que son 2) no se comunican entre ellas, una nos dio permiso para hacer una cosa y luego la otra se enfadó y nos dijo que nos teníamos que ir al día siguiente. A parte ni nos recibieron (no conocimos a la anfitriona, solo vía whatsapp). Estuvimos durmiendo en el suelo, sin ningún tipo de mueble donde dejar nuestras cosas protegidas y en todo momento el tono en el que nos hablaron fue horrible. Hasta los otros voluntarios alucinaron cuando nos dijeron que nos teníamos que ir. El que quiera saber más que me hable sin problem

Volunteering at the shelter & Cascada Verde was a memorable experience. Working with the cats and Tricia was lovely and the locals are welcoming. The hostel is a jungle paradise, with daily wildlife sightings. The work was simple, hours were as promised, and I loved meeting guests from around the world. The hostel's rustic conditions and the steep walk from town can be tough, but the food is delicious. Be prepared for bugs and humidity, and know what season you're visiting in. It's not for everyone, but this is a good opportunity for adventurous people. Thanks Tricia & Julie, Pura Vida! :)
