Kai was an intelligent conversationalist and an outstanding sensei whom I definitely learned a lot from. He was also incredibly polite, attentive, and empathetic. The property was amazing, (also a stone's throw away from Tokyo) and Kai's inspiring vision for the local community has me excited for my next visit. Teaching the students was a joy, we had fun and I will miss this time in Japan very much. Being in nature and surrounded by a supportive community allowed me to connect with my mind and body in a transformative way. This experience will always enrich me. Okagesama de Kai san!

Kai's place is awesome. It's an excellent place to learn about Japan and to get to know a small community in Sagamiko. The people are all very welcoming and the place is very quaint and unique. The work isn't difficult and there's optional training which is great for improving your discipline. I would definitely recommend staying with Kai for at least 2 weeks but a longer stay will for sure teach you more.

I enjoyed working at the hostel. The scenery was great! The cleaning of the hostel was easy and straightforward. The students were kind and friendly. You will teach middle school students and high school/college students. The classes were mostly conversational English. Cleaning starts at 10 am. The lessons start around 17:30 to 21:00. (5:30-8) So, I had time to explore the area. I liked how we all took turns making lunch and dinner. I got to try amazing food. Kai was a kind and welcoming host. He made sure that I was comfortable and would answer all my questions.

My experience at Kai's place was not very satisfactory. The lessons and the locals were fun but I would suggest the host could improve some aspects: - He could be more attentive in informing & responding to volunteers - Respect for other people's space and our image and publicity rights. I recommend checking with volunteers to see if they allow you to use their image -Be flexible about what volunteers may not want to join in if it's not initially agreed -I would suggest the host to add that he expects the volunteers to cook for him -Location is not very convenient, nearest station is 3km

Sorry for your unsatisfactory stay in our place. I am and will always try to learn from my mistakes.

One thing I want to make clear: before you came to our place, a lady had been working here and continued to work while you were here. She preferred cooking over dishwashing, and I preferred dishwashing over cooking. So we had an agreement that she would cook and I would do the dishwashing. Therefore, during your time here, I was responsible for the dishwashing.
Normally, we alternate between cooking and dishwashing, as I mentioned in the description.

I should have informed you about the agreement with the other volunteer. I apologize once again.

I hope your unsatisfactory stay here did not tarnish your image of Japan.

Sincerely,
Kai

Words cannot describe how absolutely inspiring and genuine Kai is and as such made it one of the most memorable experiences. From the very beginning Kai made me feel as welcoming as a family member. He always went out of his way to help make my experience in helping conversational English with his students a truly inspiring experience. I also reccomend his "karate kid" style training exercise in the morning which will transform you into a new person!!

Kai is an excellent host and I'm very happy to have worked with him. His home is very beautiful and completely immersed in gorgeous mountains. The English lessons are a lot of fun and the work hours are not too long so you have plenty of free time.
