Explore Western Australia's South West farm and wine region

I spent two weeks on a the farm near Carlotta, in Western Australia. Despite the beautiful setting and pleasant meals, the overall experience was disappointing. The six-day work week, the lack of heating in the accommodation, and the lack of recognition for the work accomplished when we left made the experience sometimes unpleasant. However, I appreciated observing the starry sky at night, discovering dishes cooked by other volunteers, enjoying Linda's very good cooking, and feeding the animals, even though it was only a small part of the day.

Thank you for your comments Souliman, all feedback is appreciated, especially where we can improve the experience for our backpackers.
I wish you had mentioned the lack of heating as that could have easily been solved.
We take your comments onboard.
Linda and I are disappointed your experience was not what we strive for and we will review our procedures to make sure that future backpackers have a positive experience

Linda and Stanley were lovely wholesome hosts. Sit down dinners every night, check. Re-envisioning healthy food consumption like making yogurt, and hummus from scratch, check. While downtime feels limited it's because there always a lot of socializing, catching sunsets, going into town for markets, ice cream, or chopping wood for fun. Taking care of the animals and being so close to nature and all the different varieties of plants Linda has in her garden is truly awakening and reminds us all that farming is not a hobby but a life skill. <3

Josie was a joy to have on the farm. She is always cheerful, and always happy to bog in. She is a great worker, and never complains. She will be an asset wherever she goes and whatever she does .

The farm became a short-term home in 3 weeks. Three weeks of routine, time in nature, the insight into the (diverse) farm life and the travel time-out did us a world of good. This was also thanks to John and Linda, who gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel part of the family, but also Robby:) A highlight is the daily dinner together

I spent 3 weeks at the farm, and I had an amazing time. John & Linda are very welcoming, taking you into their home and their life. Evening dinners are amazing, Linda and John are both amazing storytellers, and they do have a lot of storys to share. You will laugh a lot!! The farm work varies, so it doesn't get boring. It can be physically challenging, if you are not used to that kind of work. But your body gets used to it and it feels good to be active. So thanks to Linda and John, as well es to Robbie, Lara and Jess, who made the experience as wonderful as it was!

I had a great experience at the farm. John and Linda are really lovely and sympathetic people. You will share all together the dinner in their house. It was always a great time. They always try for you to feel comfortable. The work can be physical and with the hot weather coming be aware that it can sometimes be hard. I really enjoyed my time over there and I have beautiful memories in my mind.

Time at the farm is such a treat. John and Linda are extremely kind hosts who want the very best for you. I've learned so much from my time here on the farm. From throwing slop, to learning to prepare a chicken, to using a screwdriver, to chopping weeds, to eating kangaroo, and hanging out with emus, this is truly an unforgettable experience. Come prepared to get your hands dirty and learn a lot :) Bring good working boots if you have them! John and Linda are the best and have some old farm clothes you can borrow as well so you don't destroy all your stuff. Grateful for my time here!

John and Linda are so INCREDIBLE! I've learned so much in just 2 weeks and so grateful for them and my time here. Other travelers here have also been such a highlight. A working day is 3 hours in the morning, 2 hours lunch break, then 3 hours in the afternoon. Jobs and roles changed daily which made it fun and we kept learning so many new things. They supply food for breakfast and lunch and dinner is together every night! So many laughs and solid conversations around the dinner table! Highly recommend spending some time at the farm! You'll learn so much!
