Chestnut Brae Farm

Chestnut Brae Farm is the most beautiful farm in the south west. It comprises 70 acres with 20 acres of sweet chestnuts and daffodils. The farm is in Carlotta just 10 minutes drive south of Nannup and 55 minutes inland from Margaret River. The region is a beautiful food and wine production area and Nannup is the centre of the south west, so it is a perfect spot to explore the entire south west region. We have sheep, goats, alpaca, chickens, turkeys, guinea fowl, and pigs.

Backpacker accommodation is separate from the family home. We have a caravan that is suitable for couples it has no power, but toilets are nearby.

The farm is run by Linda and John Stanley and we love to have volunteers from around the world stay with us and share their stories of their home town. As our own family have all grown up and left home, we treat volunteers as though they are part of our family. We have a special room for volunteers and volunteers have their own bathroom and toilet. Volunteers eat meals with us and if you would like to share in the cooking sometimes we are happy with that. We do recommend that volunteers get a Telstra simcard before travelling to regional areas as telephone reception can be otherwise limited. Frequently Asked Questions can be found here: https://chestnutbrae.com.au/volunteers/ Backpackers should consider bringing the following items to the farm: - working boots, -long sleeved shirts, -a hat (with a preference for broad brimmed for sun safety) - long pants/trousers - a head torch or small torch for night times Chestnut Brae provide protective clothing if and when required. Please note, in winter it does get quite cold and wet, we recommend anyone visiting from May- August to keep this in mind when packing.

It's was real pleasure to meet Linda and John and learn more about the farm!
They really do create a friendly atmosphere, both during the day and at mealtimes (Discovering Australian cuisine through Linda's cooking was a real pleasure)
Prepare to be completely immersed in their daily lives on a fairly isolated farm:)
Good luck for the rest of your adventures

My time spent at Chestnut Brae was an incredibly grounding and rewarding experience. From the moment I arrived I felt welcome, John and Lina are wonderful hosts who take interest in and make time for volunteers.
The work itself was hands-on, from sorting and peeling the chestnuts, to feeding the animals. There’s something satisfying about spending your days outdoors, connecting with nature, and contributing to the farm, while simultaneously learning about agriculture, health and well being, and sustainable farming.
This was a great first experience on my volunteer journey!

Ciara-Ann is very passionate about what she wants to achieve in her life, and was an excellent help on the farm. We would recommend Ciara to other hosts. We would invite her back anytime.
Keep in touch Ciara and stay focused on your journey

John and Linda are excellent hosts that really go above and beyond to make sure you feel welcomed and settled in. Their passion for the farm really shows. They gave plenty of advice for the local area and transport, plus home cooked dinners every night. The work alternates daily so was varied when I was there. The farm itself is beautiful and it’s so easy to immerse yourself in the nature around. This was my first Worldpackers experience so I didn’t know what to expect but the 2 weeks I was there were a real highlight of my travels!

I had a really good time at chestnut brae for the two and a half weeks I spent there. It’s a perfect place if you’re looking to slow down and reconnect with nature and it’s located in a good spot to explore the surrounding area ( as long as you have a car ) You get to learn a lot about chestnut and the production process which is fun but also demanding at times, especially during harvest season. Overall, it’s a unique and beautiful place and I would definitely recommend it.
