Yabucoa Dreaming

Work at your own pace, but in coordination with the plants' needs and your fellow workers, spend five or more hours daily in hot and humid nature (growing zone 12+, so not comparable to mainland USA or European farming) and enjoy the comfort of a good house. Bring your skills, learn and share. Yabucoa is a beautiful municipality and the house overlooks the valley and sea. The land is fertile, but there are several challenges working it; heat, iguanas, ants, fast growing weed,... With the help of volunteers I hope to create an edible forest, restore the soil and feed more than just us. Once a week we help other farmers and every six weeks they come and help us.

I started this permaculture project in 2020, and spend most of my time on the farm. Sometimes I have to attend meetings in San Juan or look after my mother in Bayamón, and might stay over night. I'm very hands on and love to break up the day in smaller tasks, keeping busy and offline as often as my other jobs allow it. Volunteers will be trained by me and will work partially in teams, partially alone. Nature dictates the hours - heat, rain, planting or harvesting season etc. I strongly suggest you spend as little time as necessary online or in your room/bed, and make use of instruments, tools, read books, enjoy the view, go for walks and engage in conversations. Meals are taken together, no phones at the table.

There is not enough space to encapsulate how incredible of an experience Lisa provides with her farm in Yabucoa. From her Michelin worthy cooking, extensive knowledge that you will gain about agriculture in the tropics, appreciating farm to table, breathtaking views, and incredible people you will get to meet. If you arrive prepared to embrace a challenge, you will be rewarded with a positive life changing experience. My only regret is not having more time to stay, but I make it my full intent to return. Thank you Lisa for everything, buen provecho.

My experience at Lisa’s was nothing short of amazing! As soon as I met Lisa she had good energy. She is very sweet and has so many interesting life stories and knowledge to share. The house is clean, organized, and spacious which made it easy for me to relax and have good sleep for time out on the farm! the food was so yummy and healthy with so much grown from the farm which felt so rewarding! We got to meet other locals and visit different farms through the brigade lisa is in. The work could sometimes be challenging but so worth it! I’ll cherish my time there and hope I can visit again:)

My time on the farm was unforgettable. Lisa is a wealth of wisdom and anyone who listens can learn a lot from her and her experiences. The delicious, farm-fresh meals we shared were made even more memorable by the thought-provoking conversations we had over them. But beware, if you're looking for a free vacation, search elsewhere. The sun is hot and the work is hard, but for a person with a good attitude, this place is perfect.

Ha, ha, you nailed it! It's a farm, not a retreat. But I'm happy you enjoyed your stay and want to come back. You're greatly missed.

Yabucoa Dreaming set the bar high for my first WorldPacker experience!

Lisa’s passion for permaculture and cozy, well-organized space made me feel safe and supported. The work was challenging but rewarding, with a great balance of structure and leisure.

The schedule is flexible as long as you complete your hours, and she was extremely patient as I was learning, and finding my way through the farm.

An unforgettable experience. I’ve learned so much about PR, farming and myself!

Gracias Lisa por todo! Eres gran persona!

The entire experience was wonderful! Exactly what is needed more of in life is education about farming sustainability. The accommodations were excellent and the food was excellent! Had a chance to meet other travelers from around the worldpackers community and get to know them and share experiences in their travels. Highly recommended if you want to learn about farming and sustainability!!
