Villa Sarmuci

I initiated the Villa Sarmuci project in 2010 after selling an apartment I owned in the city center of Castellammare del Golfo. The desire to live in close proximity to nature, away from the noises and sounds typical of a city, became particularly strong during the summer period, marked by the bustling attractions of the sea, mountains, thermal waters, and nearby archaeological sites. Motivated by this, I made the decision to purchase Villa Sarmuci.

The property, surrounded by diverse fruit-bearing trees, olive groves, and a cluster of pine and cypress trees near the house, provides ample shade even in the peak of summer. This, along with the naturally pleasant temperature, enhances the overall living experience.

After about 2 years of having bought Villa Sarmuci, in my free time I started to build my own project with the help of someone, the "Sunflower Tree House", ideal for two people with a complete bathroom. From that moment I realized that instead of keeping the experience gained and the positive energy that the tree house immersed in nature with sea view, the olive harvest and appreciating the final product, olive oil organic extra virgin olive, being able to pick fruit directly from the tree and put it in your mouth without even having to wash it, or transform it into preserves or jam, without any chemical additives, grow a vegetable garden and therefore be able to pick vegetables and greens with your own hands of organic production. Sharing this with many people and volunteers from all over the world, in my way of seeing it, is also a cultural exchange because you also learn from others, create friendships, get closer to others and build Peace.

I had a great time on this trip. Picking the olives was very therapeutic and was lovely to be outside all day. Learning about olive pressing was also very interesting and seeing the sites of Sicily was great, especially the hot springs!
Although I wasn't learning Italian this would be a great stay to improve your language.

Was very nice and helpful to have Ulla volunteering in my place pickup olives, helping in the house and preparing food. Ulla is a proactive person, very polite, friendly and sociable.
I recommend Ulla without doubt in any place. If she like to come back I will receive her at any period of the year. Good luck.

The landscape of the place is beautiful! The work is hard, but it feels great to be in touch with the trees and nature around. I learned great deal about Italian culture and language! We worked 6h/day + commute, which is done by car with the host, Ignazio. He, in his own way, does not show so much appreciation for the volunteers. He has a harsh way of expressing himself. Besides, he assumed having an intimacy with me that I never gave him, and I had to stand up for myself and set real boundaries. His brother Leo and a friend Lucia are lovely people and I’m grateful they were around.

I'm glad you like the place and you learn that work in the country side is hard and I explained it very well. Volunteering is not a holiday, in my place is 6 hours for 5 days.
I'm very friendly and warm person like everyone in south Italy specially in Sicily, and we share everything we have. I know well that human warmth is unknown in the north and it is likely that you have never encountered it. Enjoy your life.

This was a fun adventure and I learned lots about local plants and food! I really enjoyed caring for / pruning the olive trees and harvesting olives. We also harvested some fruits and almonds!

One thing that wasn’t the best was the host, Ingazio, isn’t super respectful of some boundaries. Although it was something that can be dealt with for short term stays :)
