Tryggvi & Pauline's House

If you are looking for a laid back learning experience in a real loving family atmosphere this is the place for you <3 Our volunteers never really think of being "workers" more like one of the family. Tryggvi loves to teach youngsters how to do practical things like laying tiles, putting in ceiling tiles, car mechanics, plumbing, electrical work etc.

Pauline teaches public speaking and helps women thrive through their menopause. Both are full of fun and interesting stories.

Tryggvi is Icelandic and is a retired car mechanic/builder/welder/bus driver etc. and has so many skills. He is really patient and an excellent teacher. He retired early due to ill health. He nearly died during covid and has Long Covid. He tends to try to do too much but we have to invite him to take a break, otherwise he does too much and then has to be in bed for a couple of days :/ Pauline is originally from Scotland but travelled the world for many years as a volunteer finally settling down in Iceland 32 years ago. She is working on making an online course for women to thrive through their menopause naturally. We are both from big families, Tryggvi is one of 7 and Pauline is one of 10 so we love to have lots of folk in the house. Tryggvi is now 68 Pauline is 64. Pauline goes back to Iceland in the summer as she has a small business there in tourism. Our adult children and grandchildren all live in Iceland. We tend to treat our volunteers like family and are still very close with many of the volunteers we have had in the past. Our small town of Kaloyanovo has a population of about 3,000 people but the city of Plovdiv is only a 30 min drive away. The spa town of Hisaria is 20 mins drive north. We have 2 cats and 2 kittens and one puppy who live in the garden. PLEASE BE AWARE that we are unable to help you get a Shengen visa. We have sent letters of invitation to folk in Morocco and Algeria but they were rejected by the Bulgarian Embassies.

Kim was one of the best volunteers we have had. You could not do better than to host her. She is extremely friendly, helpful, adaptable and willing to learn new skills. She was like a daughter to us. She is always welcome back <3

When we went it was just Tryggvi there and he is a very good host and visibly did everything to make us comfortable, we had a very nice experience but could be improved, we didn’t have a schedule and half of the work was asking what we could do and most of the time Tryggvi didn’t have a plan for the day so we never did the agreed time but stayed most of the day available. Also the location isn’t that close to the city, is about 40 minutes from it and the public transportation wasn’t the best and the buses back stopped around 6pm, I’m sure we could have borrowed the car but we didn’t want to.

It was not what we expected, we have no complaints about the work to be done but about the forms of coexistence and treatment.

I would avoid this place if you don't like feeling welcomed and part of a true community 🥰 I throughly enjoyed my experience with Pauline and Tryggvi, I felt so welcomed from my first night when I arrived rather late 🫣😊 until the very end of my stay.

I wouldn't even class the work as 'work', it was so laid-back and I felt like I was learning something new everyday and enjoying it. Everything was perfect 👌🏻
