Rural to Action Charity

Rural to Action community organization is a youth-led, youth-centric organization empowering vulnerable girls through empowerment and social entrepreneurship. Join Our Family and Youth-Led Organization for an Adventure-Packed Experience. Volunteers join us for an unforgettable experience where you can volunteer your time in our community organic farm to learn how we embody the power of insects (Black soldier fly) to turn organic wastes into valuable proteins for chicken feeds and frass as organic manure for our organic farm. As a volunteer in our young organization, you will learn skills on exercising your knowledge and experience in engaging with local youths and learning rural life and African culture. By volunteering during your stay with us, you will also gain experience in global public health and the green and circular economy. On the other hand, volunteers enjoy basking in the cool breeze of Lake Victoria, witnessing the breathtaking sunset, and immersing themselves in the local community while interacting with our beneficiary girls. Take rides across to explore Ruma National Park, home to the African roan antelope, and be amazed by its natural beauty and wild animals. Plus, our volunteers will get a chance to experience our community-led change dabbed, 'Think global, act local.

My name is Joseph Were, a Kenyan aged 29 years. I am the co-founder of the Rural to Action community organization alongside my wife Beryl who is a true champion of community development and peer mentor. My work is driven by the desire to improve the lives of vulnerable young people in rural Homabay. One of the ways I do this is by practicing regenerative agriculture that promotes resilience and sustainability. Meet Beryl, my wife and fellow co-founder. She is a champion of change for girls and works alongside me to support vulnerable teenage mothers and girls to become self-reliant and resilient. We welcome volunteers to our rural home where you will stay with our lovely family. We will provide a comfortable environment for you to experience the community we serve through our organization. We shall take care of our esteemed visitors in our rural home by experiencing local transportation (motorcycle, and boat rides on Lake Victoria), my family is welcoming, and we provide. Volunteers in our will enjoy three meals in a day with a mix of African dishes made locally in our family (Fish, Ugali, sweet potato, eggs, groundnuts, cones, kale, and many more African vegetables). Other than meals we will provide a hike on the hills around Mbita, and a tour around the beaches to experience fishing activities taking place along Lake Victoria. Note: We offer complimentary accommodation and meals for our volunteers; however, we ask for a weekly contribution of $200. This fee helps support our community charity initiatives. We graciously thank you for being part of us.

The hosting and the project is really great.
Joseph and Berryl are really welcoming and good people. However, we felt disappointed because we act and learned less than we thought : due to the dry season we were not able to plant so much, also during the mentoring, we could feel frustrated because of the langage used (Luo) so we couldn't actively participate : Proposing activities that don't need langage to connect each other would be a good beggining to solve that problem. So, good project, needs help to be more developped and welcoming to volunteers who need to learn and be active.

Dear Victor and Amelie. Your visit was indeed a great honor to us. It was indeed pleasure having you. Despite my busy work schedule, Beryl dedicated the time to give the best. Its nature we experienced drought thus no planting and farming activities but in our charity work. It's true we couldn't revert drought to rainfall, as a young organization we keep growing and sustainable irrigation and food production remains our desire towards giving a child hope through our cup of porridge charity.
