Pension Gradina



The work here is varied and amongst other things includes:

*daily maintenance of the facilities/ grounds
*farm work at other sites at my family’s nearby olive grove which includes gardening and
watering as well as help with Eco Projects
*picking of olives (end of October/ all November)

Opportunities are also available for people with practical skills such as carpentry, general maintenance and painting, and we are also interested in people who would like to share their countries traditions, language and cuisine.

*Farmarbeit auf den lokalen Farmen und im Olivenhain unserer Familie, welches Gärtnern &
Giessen sowie Hilfe bei ökologischen Projekten einschliesst
*Oliven pflücken/ ernten (Ende Oktober/ gesamter November)

Es sind auch praktische Kenntnisse wie Zimmern, generelle Reparaturarbeiten sowie Malern erwünscht, und wir sind auch an work awayern interessiert, die gern ihre Traditionen, Sprache sowie Ess-und Kochkultur teilen.

IMPORTANT
Please be aware that it is essential to be pro-active and that you are ok with getting your hands dirty. Sometimes your days may be physically demanding and you should be prepared to start early (ca. 6 or 7 am) during warmer weather.
This is a sharing experience, so please do not treat your work hovos time here as a free holiday.
You can expect to be working ca. 5 hrs a day, 5 days a week. These working hours can be flexible depending on the work load.

Annual work cycle
April to September is our high season. ‘GRADINA’s’ quiet season is in October & November and again in February & March. During this time we concentrate mainly on the farm, working in the olive groves and to re-build and renovate.
Experience over time has shown that it is best when ‘work hovos ’ stay for a minimum of two weeks.
You are very welcome to mutually share hard work, lots of fun and joy.

Bitte sei Dir bewusst, dass es wesentlich ist pro-aktiv zu sein und sich auch mal die Hände schmutzig zu machen. Manche Tage können körperlich anstrengend sein und im Hochsommer wird auch mal gegen 6 oder 7 Uhr frühmorgens gestartet.
Es ist kein freier Urlaub hier sondern ein gegenseitiges Teilen, Geben und Nehmen.
Die durchschnittliche Arbeitszeit beträgt 5 Stunden am Tag, 5 Tage die Woche. Dies kann auch mal flexibel gestaltet sein, so wie es die Situation am Tag erfordert.

Jahresarbeitszyklus
April bis September ist Hochsaison in der Pension und im Restaurant GRADINA.
‚GRADINA’s ruhige Saison ist in den Monaten Oktober, November, Februar und März. In dieser Zeit arbeiten wir vor allem auf der Farm, in den Oliven-Hainen und tätigen Renovierungs- und Reparaturarbeiten.
Mit der Zeit hat uns die Erfahrung gelehrt, dass es für beide Seiten sinnvoll ist, wenn ‚work hovos " mindestens 2 Wochen hier bleiben.

My name is Robert. Over the years I spent quite a bit of time in Berlin, yet my true home has always been the picturesque village of Loviste at the Adriatic, north of Dubrovnik, in Croatia. In 2011, I finally said farewell to the ‘big city’ and since then my focus has been on helping my family to run the pension & restaurant ‘GRADINA’, to work on our ecologically oriented farm, to provide the restaurant with fresh fish that needs to be caught daily and to do all maintenance work needed around the ground, farm and olive grove. Loviste is a beautiful place and I would like to invite you to come here and work & share with us. In exchange you will get fresh seafood, delicious meals, clean comfortable accommodation and plenty of free time to relax & explore. Mein Name ist Robert. Obwohl ich über eine längere Zeit in Berlin gelebt habe, ist mein wahres Zuhause doch immer das landschaftlich idyllische Dorf Loviste geblieben, an der schönen Adria, nördlich von Dubrovnik in Kroatien. Seitdem ich mich im Jahr 2011 endgültig von der ‚grossen Stadt‘ verabschiedet habe, liegt mein Fokus darauf meiner Familie in ‚GRADINA‘, einer Pension mit Restaurant zu helfen, auf unserer ökologisch orientierten Farm zu arbeiten, das Restaurant täglich mit frisch gefangenem Fisch zu versorgen und die um das Objekt, die Farm und die Oliven- Haine anfallenden Arbeiten zu tätigen. Loviste ist ein sehr schönes Örtchen und ich möchte dazu einladen herzukommen und gemeinsam mit uns zu arbeiten & teilen. Im Austausch dazu gibt es frische, schmackhafte Fischgerichte, eine saubere und bequeme Unterkunft sowie viel freie Zeit zum Erholen und Erkunden.

Amazing place! Tasks are simple: cleaning, doing laundry, keeping everything organized and functioning and some times helping in the restaurant. Once you know what to do, you’re quite independent and manage your own hours.

The accommodation is 1.3km away but there are bikes and a car available to use. Robert is also very flexible and let us use the car to drive to Orebić for the day.

The food was okay, they prepare it at the restaurant. I’m vegetarian so I did have to buy my own protein at times unless I wanted to eat salad/pasta only.

Overall, it was a great experience!

Pros:
- beaches are really beautiful and the village is very tranquil and peaceful. We had a great time in that enjoyable environment.
- Most of the staff were also really helpful and friendly.
Cons:
- There were numerous of miscommunication issues, the restaurant owner didn’t know exactly me and my friend were going to volunteer until that morning. Regarding the tasks allocation, it was extremely unclear. The owner didn’t mention clearly what tasks we have to do and instead just claimed that “you would know what you should do if you treat it as your home” and has been sarcastic all the time

I had a great experience volunteering at Gradina. The place itself is amazing; immediate waterfront and beautiful sunsets, delicious food freshly made for every meal, kind and generous people. The work is reasonable with a lot of variety and the working hours are respected, but the work can be very unorganized and we were often given insufficient or contradictory instructions to our tasks. You will be given harsh feedback both to your face and behind your back, but in the end the owner and his team are awesome and always want to make sure you're comfortable. I truly enjoyed my time here!

A beautifully stunning location with warm locals. Comfortable accommodation within the hotel and amazing meals cooked by the chefs. Hours are a little flexible because you are like part of the family and the place needs something done at all times. Robert has a wonderful sense of humor and wants to know your feedback throughout the experience. The daily tasks were slightly different which kept it fun and exciting. Don't allow yourself to take anything too personal here and you will be just fine! Gradina, Thank you for taking great care of me this past month and helping me to learn!!!

Pasamos dos semanas en abril haciendo un voluntariado en Loviste. Aunque inicialmente esperábamos trabajar en los olivos o en el restaurante, al no ser temporada ayudamos en limpieza de áreas y construcción de terrazas en campos de olivos, una tarea exigente. Robert, el anfitrión, es muy trabajador, organizado y respetuoso con horarios y días libres. La comida fue muy buena y nos prestaron bicicletas para movernos por el tranquilo pueblo. Recomendamos esta experiencia a personas polivalentes que busquen desconexión, aunque las opciones de transporte son limitadas.
