Maleny Eco Village

Maleny Eco Village is a small, intimate eco community. The vibe here is "family you can choose". We would love to welcome you into our little family.

We live in small buildings and cabins, nestled by lush surrounds, surrounded by rainforest trees with a heart-shaped (swimmable) dam. Expect lots of nature just 5 minutes walk from the creative, hippy and green town of Maleny. Maleny is a famous tourist town of of only 3000 people.

We live simply (outdoor shower etc), and live a predominately outdoor lifestyle. Residents here have a carbon footprint of just 6% of the average Australian.

Our major task in life is to look after the land, each other and ourselves! We use Non Violent Communication (NVC) as our primary communication and conflict tool.

You will learn about trees, weeds, fungi, edible weeds, permaculture and living lightly on the planet. Some of the residents are politically involved too, so you may learn about Australian politics if you want :)

Maleny Eco Village is easily accessible by public transport with only a train and a bus from Brisbane central. When you get here it's only 7 minutes walk from the closest bus stop. We have e-bikes for you to borrow if you want to explore the area.

You are going to love it here.

We don't have staff. We have co-creators. One of our core values is 'working together'. Work isn't work when done in a group! We put a lot of energy into getting to know our volunteers. Our shared meals are vegan and we love wildlife. You may be lucky enough to catch us when we are doing a building project - we are currently finishing a stone building with a garden on the roof!. There is a lot of bush regeneration and weeding to do in summer. We are flexible - some days we put a lot of work in and some days we enjoy board games, communal meals and our favourite - a Monday nights in 'Maleny Lane' for our community music night. Our work programme goes for a minimum of 1 week and maximum of 2 weeks. Some travellers have transitioned to short-term residents - we have helped them find a job in town (plenty of hospo, cleaning or gardening jobs) and they pay reduced rent with reduced hours expected.

This was my first work exchange programme and it honestly exceeded all my expectations! Even though I was at the village for just a week, I learned so much about both creating a sustainbile community but also so much from impacts of colonialisation to being more mindful! I’m always hesitant when I see somewhere say they’re ’like a family’ as I think it’s a buzz word, but from start to finish, Tammie and Andrew made a genuine family feel which was inclusive and authentic. Super grateful for this experience!

Beautiful project and beautiful people! 100% recommend it, specially if you are looking for a place that actually puts into practice sustainability and a simple healthy lifestyle. I would suggest to bring work boots, or gum boots, as it can get a bit muddy if it rains

I have to thank Andrew for his flexibility and kindness as I had one of the most transformative and personally significant expereinces with the beautiful combination of people I met during my stay. It wasn't what I expected and was so much more valuable than I could've dreamed of. The magic of this place and the surrounding area is pulsating, vivid, alive, and very readily apparant. I was barefoot always. I was laughing more often than not. I felt welcomed and loved and free. Thank you!! 🫂🌲🌾🦌

Noah, to witness, and be a part of, your transformation was a privilege. You are always welcome here - tho I can’t guarantee another transformation like it next time :)

You have a lovely nature, are a pleasure to be around. Quiet, hardworking, respectful, gentle, empathetic, caring and funny. You deserve the best that life has to offer. Thank you for sharing yourself with our little community.

I was there my first month of Australia and I really loved it. It is a really amazing community, who will always fulfill all your needs and you will really have a great experience. The day I arrived I already felt comfortable and Andrew really is the best host, really flexible and always there for you. I met some amazing people, from all around the world, who I will miss very much. You will also learn a lot about living eco friendly and learning about Australia’s nature and ecosystems.

The Eco Village was lovely the whole community was extremely welcoming and friendly. It was a great way to experience a more sustainable living environment. Make sure your prepared to be fully living in nature as this may come as a shock if your not used to this lifestyle. Only improvement I would suggest is having a little more schedule to the days e.g knowing exactly when we are working and when we can have a break as some days this was not communicated as much. However Andrew is a very flexible host that is always othering help. He is also he is extremely knowledgeable on sustainability.
