Casa Qatzij

If you are looking to stay at a chill and cozy house with a feeling of community, Casa Qatzij is what are you looking for! Volunteer tasks involve daily tasks and longer term projects. Checking in guests, offering hospitality, helping with pet care, garden work, meal preparation and keeping the kitchen and common places clean are quotidian in nature. Helping promote Casa Qatzij with social media is also important. Special projects involve mural painting, some construction, more intense garden care, and occasional community projects to do!

San Lucas Toliman is a traditional Mayan village with less tourism than others around the lake. There are plenty of exciting opportunities available such as hiking, volcano climbing (Tolimán and Atitlán), swimming or kayaking in the Lake, visiting Cerro Iquitiú or Cerro de Oro. Temazcal healing ceremonies are offered by a Mayan spiritual guide in the Kaqchiquel tradition.

In your days off you can take a lancha to Panajachel or a pick up truck to Santiago Atitlan and explore other towns on the lake known as a volcanic paradise.

At Casa Qatzij, volunteers form part of a work team that helps make the guest house function. Team meetings take place to ensure good communication and coordination, making sure everyone's needs are met and daily tasks as well as long term projects are discussed. Volunteers work closely with housekeeping staff on maintaining a clean kitchen and keeping the place tidy, especially shared spaces.

I had an excellent experience with Andrés, Kayla, and the other volunteer Elena. The lake nearby is beautiful, San Lucas Toliman itself is one of the least touristy towns on the lake which is lovely. Everyone there is very welcoming, really friendly. Felt very safe there despite having been warned about other parts of Guatemala compared to Costa Rica (where I'd been just before). Gladys and Myra, the two houseladies, both treated me so well and it was great to practice my Spanish with them. Would have stayed longer if my coffers were deep enough...
