Associazione Ciccio Garibaldi

Our fight to save strays around the town of Calatafimi Segesta in Sicily started 18 years ago with just a single dog but as the years went by, the number of dogs in need of help increased significantly. In 2015, we officially started the only dog refuge in Calatafimi, and since then saved more than 1000 homeless, abandoned, and abused dogs. Most of them have been happily adopted since and are living in their forever homes. We are still in touch with all of them.

But sadly after every dog who gets adopted comes many more due to the lack of sensibility and sterilization. We are struggling to keep up and give them all the care they deserve, to feed and pamper them.

Our mission is to provide medical services and safe shelter for our abandoned friends. Our group of international and Italian volunteers have strong adoption programs to ensure that we find loving and secure homes for as many of them as we can, but this can take a long time and we don't have the capacity to do it on our own. This is why we are asking for your help!

We are Nelly and Franco, the founders of the shelter. We started welcoming volunteers in our home in 2019 and since then had the pleasure of working with hundreds of amazing people from all over the world. We love sharing our culture, experience and passion for animal welfare with volunteers. We speak Italian and only a very basic English but are used to communicating without a common language so don't worry if you don't speak any Italian, it has never been a problem. Helping us coordinating with you here is Dalma, you will be talking to her about organizing your trip and all details before arriving to the shelter. Accommodation is coed, in a simple and very rustic little cottage that the volunteers (usually around 6 amazing people at any one time!) have for themselves. It has a small loft-bit and séparés around the beds, so privacy is limited to say the least. It's right below the main house and in the middle of the shelter (the enclosures of the dogs are close by), in the middle of nature. Please be sure to check the photos before applying to know what to expect. There are plenty of things to do in your free time. Sicily has a rich culture and history, not to mention all the breathtaking nature to explore and amazing foods to try. Our shelter is located just outside the town of Calatafimi Segesta in the province of Trapani in western Sicily, with good access to the area. Spots of interest include Palermo, Trapani, Castellamare del Golfo, San Vito Lo Capo, Marsala, Erice, or the Aegadian Islands, among others. Without a car, it is difficult to be completely independent, but we are happy to give you a lift to the nearest bus- or train station on your days off. From there, it's only up to you what you choose to discover! As for buying groceries, we go to the supermarket a few times a week by car so everyone can get their shopping done. After that it's up to you guys if you'd like to cook and eat together or everyone on their own. On Sundays we all have lunch or dinner together at the main house.

My stay at the Shelter was great. Nelly and Franco are amazing hosts, and their dedication to helping dogs is truly inspiring. Unfortunately, a few volunteers had left before I arrived, which made the workload a bit heavier. However, Nelly was always checking in on us to make sure we were doing okay. The work is quite physical, and there are a lot of stairs. But the experience was absolutely worth it. For Sunday Lunches, they cook the most delicious Sicilian dishes for the volunteers. This was my first volunteering experience, and I loved it. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Such an amazing experience! Nelly and Franco are lovely and made me feel super welcome from the start. The dogs were the best part—spending time with them just brought me so much joy everyday ❤️
The accommodation is simple, but being with the other volunteers really made it feel like home. Especially waking up to the beautiful view over the Sicilian countryside was incredible.
It was peaceful, quiet, and exactly the kind of break I didn’t know I needed.

I felt truly comfortable here and can’t wait to come back. It was an experience I’ll never forget.

The care of the dogs at the shelter is incredible. They are very well looked after, and the work is hard but satisfying.
I had to leave early due to the unsanitary conditions of the volunteer shelter (live and dead mice, mouse droppings in the kitchen, bird nests on the roof, no windows.). I would have liked more information/photos about the installation and for both hosts (Franco and Nelly) to be there. I spoke with Nelly about my departure and there was good communication. Thank you for the great work and effort in caring for the dogs. If the conditions were better I would stayed the time❤️

Sorry Ana didn’t find things to her liking. She left instead of talking to us or pitching in - unlike other volunteers who arrived the same day and helped clean up after a terribly messy group before them.
We like to trust people to take care of their space without needing constant checks, which doesn’t always work out.
Ana expected us to clean for her and left after claiming a health issue. This is a work exchange, not a hotel - please make sure that’s what you're looking for before applying.

I really enjoyed my 3 weeks spent at the shelter. Every day the sun was scorching which sometimes made the work difficult but it helped starting at 7am so you could skip the hottest time of the day. The dogs in the shelter are literal angels on earth and i’m going to miss them all so much. The weekly Sunday lunch was delicious. The fellow volunteers from all corners of the world were amazing, every night was spent playing cards at sunset. Overall, I would really recommend this place to everyone, it can be tiring but it’s worth it to spend even a second with the sweet doggies at the shelter :)

This is an amazing place to volunteer and help out. I stayed here for 3 weeks but now wish I had stayed longer. Neli and Franco are both great people and it's an amazing thing they are doing. The work is enjoyable, keeps you healthy (from all the walks) and is good for the soul(you spend all day with dogs). Every Sunday Neli and Franco cook beautiful sicilian lunches and sometimes there is even a sweat treat after. For anyone wanting to do a meaningful and purposeful thing I would definitely recommend volunteering here.
