My time at the host has been wonderful. Mike and Penny are amazing and funny people who are easy to get on with. They have made sure I was well looked after during my stay. the host is quite isolated due to the sounds so there isnt loads to do other than hike , kayak, or fish. However the work scheduling means that you're busy most days but can still have time to explore. Take the time to get to know Mike and Penny they really are wonderful characters. The work is restaurant and cleaning mostly, nothing too difficult. the host is beautiful, the sounds in Marlborough are truly magnificent.

I had the absolute best time at the host. The location is beautiful but remote, but if you enjoy hiking, playing board games and living a slow life, this will fit you perfectly! Penny and Mike are both wonderful people who are really nice to work with. I learned a lot working in the kitchen even if I had never worked in a kitchen before and even though it could get stressful at times I still enjoyed it very much. The other volunteers made my stay wonderful as well and I'm really happy I chose to go there!

I spent one month at the host, and first of all, it's a WONDERFUL place. I was amazed every single day for 34 days. I also met two incredible and kind people, Mike and Penny. I spent most of my time in the kitchen with Mike (the chef), who was incredibly patient and pedagogical. He always took the time to explain everything to me and to repeat things as many times as needed. They are both very chill, welcoming, and open-minded. Us 5, with Cess and Caro, we became a small family, eating, playing, and living together. I reco a 1000 times, and I am so grateful to have been able to live it.

The host is a place like no other. Penny and Mike are incredibly kind, welcoming, and patient. They take the time to answer all questions, even when it's busy, and show you how to do everything, from the kitchen and bar to housekeeping. You learn so much in a short time and gain at least two funny, lovely, and truly charming friends along the way. The scenery is absolutely stunning, and I even had the chance to go diving for mussels twice! I would highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys working in hospitality and being surrounded by nature.

The host was an amazing experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to work in a remote location while not sacrificing on comfort. Many memories and once in a lifetime opportunities were made here and I'm going to miss Penny, Michael, Olive, and Fat Guts ◡̈

The host is a gorgeous remote lodge with a cozy set up. Penny is warm, welcoming, kind with good energy. The chef, Mike honestly made me uncomfortable at times. He made a couple strange and inappropriate comments, like joking about feeding people to the pigs next door at the farm. On my last day he confronted me about not talking “enough”. I was friendly, communicative, and talked when it felt natural, which is totally normal. The lodge is very remote with one hike to do and access to kayaks but truly in a beautiful location, just something to keep in mind.
