The experience

We’re Ros and Remy, the new owners of the Green Elephant Backpackers in Observatory, Cape Town. We’ve taken over this beloved backpackers and are in the process of bringing it back to life with care, creativity, and community.

To help us do that, we’re looking for a friendly and reliable volunteer to assist with housekeeping and general upkeep of the lodge.


What you offer

25 hours of help per week

Cleaning: Help clean the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and common areas.

Housekeeping: Help with changing the bed linens and general housekeeping.


What you get

2 days off per week

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Discounts on Drinks: Get discounts for drinks and beverages from our bar.

Free Laundry: You can use our laundry room freely.

Use our equipped kitchen: Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.

Fast Internet Access: High-speed internet for you to work remotely

Dedicated Workspace: Specific space for you to work remotely


Requirements

Intermediate English

Between 20 and 40 years old

Welcomes solo volunteers, couples, and partners of volunteers

Be from outside South Africa

European Union Passport

United States visa or citizenship

Travel insurance

Flights, Travel Insurance, Internal Transportation and Visa


Program Details

Who we’re looking for:

🧽 Someone who enjoys keeping things clean, tidy and well-presented

🛏️ Has an eye for detail and takes pride in their work

😊 Friendly, helpful and respectful of guests and fellow staff

💪 Physically fit and comfortable with light physical tasks (e.g., making beds, sweeping, etc.)


Activities & Shift

Making beds and refreshing rooms for new guests

Light cleaning in dorms, bathrooms, and shared spaces

Helping with laundry (washing, folding, ironing)

Keeping the kitchen and garden areas neat and welcoming

Supporting the team where needed to keep the space running smoothly


Rules

Respect the shared spaces, staff, and guests at all times.

Keep your room and workspace tidy.

No excessive alcohol and a zero drug policy on the premises.

Be responsible with equipment (camera, phone, etc.) and always ask permission before filming/photographing guests.

Please communicate in advance if you need a day off or wish to adjust your shift.
