The experience

Hello! We’re Ros and Remy, the new owners of the Green Elephant Backpackers in Observatory, Cape Town. We’ve recently taken over this much-loved backpackers and are working hard to revive its spirit and sense of community after a tough few years post-Covid. We're looking for a creative, sociable and independent volunteer to help us capture and share our story while building a positive vibe among our guests.


What you offer

25 hours of help per week

Content Writer: Write, edit and publish inspiring content.

Photography: Take, edit and provide amazing photos.

Video Making: Create, edit and publish digital videos.

Social Media: Maintain and update social media channels.


What you get

2 days off per week

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Team Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other people.

Discounts on Drinks: Get discounts for drinks and beverages from our bar.

Discounts on Accommodation: Get discounts for your stay in other hostels.

Free Laundry: You can use our laundry room freely.

Use our equipped kitchen: Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.

Fast Internet Access: High-speed internet for you to work remotely

Dedicated Workspace: Specific space for you to work remotely


Requirements

Fluent English

Between 20 and 40 years old

Welcomes solo volunteers, couples, and partners of volunteers

Be from outside South Africa

European Union Passport

United States visa or citizenship

Travel insurance

Program Details

What We Expect from You
We’re looking for a creative and responsible volunteer to help manage and grow our social media presence. You’ll assist with content creation (photos, videos, stories), writing engaging captions, updating our platforms, and helping us build a consistent and authentic online voice. You should be proactive, have an eye for detail, and be comfortable interacting with guests to capture real experiences. Some basic knowledge of social media platforms (especially Instagram and Facebook) is essential.

In return, we offer a welcoming, laid-back environment where you’ll be part of our small team reviving a family-run backpackers. You'll get free accommodation in Observatory, one of Cape Town’s most creative and vibrant areas, with time to explore, connect, and contribute meaningfully. We’ll support your creative ideas and give you space to shape how the world sees Green Elephant. Expect collaboration, flexibility, and a chance to be part of something exciting and new!


Activities & Shift

Daily Activities Checklist

Capture photos and short videos of daily life at the backpackers

Interview or chat with guests for stories/testimonials

Post 2–3 times a week on Instagram and Facebook

Respond to basic comments or messages (optional)

Assist with content ideas and monthly themes

Keep our image library organised (Google Drive or phone)

Shift Details

5 hours a day, 5 days a week

Flexible schedule based on your creative process and local events

Rules

Additional Rules & Expectations

Respect the shared spaces, staff, and guests at all times.

Keep your room and workspace tidy.

No excessive alcohol and a zero drug policy on the premises.

Quiet hours after 10:30 PM to ensure a peaceful environment.

Be responsible with equipment (camera, phone, etc.) and always ask permission before filming/photographing guests.

Please communicate in advance if you need a day off or wish to adjust your shift.

We value honesty, respect, and collaboration – if something’s not working, let’s talk.
