Program Details
Elvira’s Garden is a family-run community youth project on the island of Grenada. Our programme supports children aged 3–15 by providing safe, structured spaces where they can learn, play, and build strong foundations for their future.
We operate year-round, running after-school programmes during term time and holiday camps when schools are closed. Our activities focus on consistency, routine, and positive relationships, which are especially important for the children and families we work with.
Volunteers play a supportive role within an established local team, helping us deliver daily activities, supervise play, and support learning in a calm, organised environment. We value reliability and genuine care for children over specific qualifications.
Throughout the year, we also host special community events, including our annual Christmas Santa’s Grotto, which is a highlight for many local families.
Activities & Shift
Volunteer activities vary slightly depending on the time of year, but most volunteers primarily support our children’s programmes. This includes helping during our after-school club in term time and our holiday camps when schools are closed.
During term time, volunteers may also support outreach visits to local schools, working alongside our team to assist with activities and engage with children in a classroom setting.
Typical tasks include assisting with activities and games, supporting group routines, helping prepare spaces and materials, and being an extra pair of hands for the local team. Volunteers are supervised and work alongside experienced staff at all times.
At certain times of year, volunteers may also help with community events or fundraising activities, such as our weekend market or car wash, which support the running of our programmes.
Shifts are planned in advance and follow a clear weekly structure, with set volunteering hours and regular days off. This helps ensure consistency for the children while also allowing volunteers time to rest and enjoy the island outside of programme hours.
Rules
We aim to create a positive, respectful environment for everyone. Volunteers are expected to treat children, staff, and fellow volunteers with care, patience, and professionalism at all times.
Because we work with children, reliability and consistency are essential. Volunteers are expected to arrive on time for scheduled shifts, communicate clearly if issues arise, and remain contactable during working days.
Safeguarding is a priority in all our programmes. Volunteers must follow all guidance provided during orientation, work under staff supervision, and respect boundaries with children and families.
We ask volunteers to respect the local community, cultural norms, and shared living spaces. Any behaviour that compromises the safety or wellbeing of children, staff, or the programme will not be tolerated.
Further details and expectations are explained during orientation to ensure everyone feels confident and supported.
