The experience

Hey DEAR volunteers !
We need your great and precious help (about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week) in our backpackers hostel in :
- helping us with the welcoming of pilgrims, with the cooking of healthy organic food - mostly vegetarian and vegan food-, with the cleaning the dishes and the hostel, gardening vegetables, medicinal plants
- creating a warm atmosphere by sharing your culture (food, music, specialities of your country) with pilgrims!

What you offer

25 hours of help per week

Animal Care: Help look after and take care of animals.

Cleaning: Help clean the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and common areas.

Kitchen Hand: Help prepare, finish and serve meals.

Gardening: Help grow plants and cultivate gardens

What you get

2 days off per week

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.

Basic Internet Access: Basic speed internet for you to work remotely

Program Details

We would need your help about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week : mainly in the morning, preparing the breakfast and helping with the cleaning of the hostel and the ironing of sheets ; and/or in the afternoon and evening to help us with the service to pilgrims, with the cooking of local and organic mostly vegetarian food, help us to set and clear tables, to play music and sing and sharing your own culture (food, traditions, music of your country) with us and the pilgrims.
We would also need help with the gardening and sometimes (if you are interested in) with the picking and transformation of medicinal plants into organic balms.

Activities & Shift

The day is mainly divided in 3 parts :
- breakfast (6 am to 9.30 am) : preparing, serving the breakfast, cooking cakes, cleaning tables ;
- then bar service (9.30 am to 2 pm), helping with cooking food and serving lunch.
In between, we also grow a vegetable garden and we help with the cleaning of the bedrooms and washing the laundry and ironing the sheets.
Then, we have a break (to clean the pub) from 2 pm to 3.30 pm.
- And the last part : 3.30 pm to 10 pm : welcoming our pilgrims, cooking food, dressing the table for dinner, singing and music and cleaning the pub.

Rules

The qualities we are looking for volunteers : you are not a smoker, not alcoholic, and you have no addictions. You are honest, trustful, easy-going, open-mind, autonomous, resourceful, and happy to be a volunteer to help us in the tasks we need you :)
We hope you find easily you place at our hostel, you "feel" the atmosphere, where you can be helpful and you learn quickly our expectations :)
We wish you enjoy meeting hikers, pilgrims from all around the world, our friends, our children (Margo 12 and Yanis and Malou, our twins of 15) ... and our 2 dogs (Flupke and Ptilou) that would be happy to have a run or a walk with you.
We hope you respect nature and enjoy nature sports (swimming, climbing, walking...) to take profit of the beautiful landscapes near the hostel.
We offer you 1 vegetarian meal a day during your "working days", so we wish you are able to buy and cook your own food during your free time. The hostel is remote in the nature with rare buses driving to cities, we hope you are not afraid to do hitchhiking -it is common to do it in the area- to reach the first city (Puy en Velay) situated at 30 km from the hostel. We rent a flat for you, for our friends who come to visit us and for our employees (the flat is situated at about 1 km from the hostel), we expect that you always keep this place clean and tidy and you respect the other people in the flat and the neighbors.
During your free days, we hope you are independent and you enjoy discovering the area around. We are lucky to have a small trainstation in our village, so it is possible for you to travel in France (the trainstation desserves 2 big cities as Clermont-Ferrand, volcanic area and Nimes, in the South).
