I absolutely loved staying with the Ortega family, they were so friendly and welcoming and despite the language barrier we still managed to communicate in some way. Marisol is an amazing cook, is always happy to help if you need, and patient if you don't speak much Spanish.I really got a true taste of Ecuadorian life and culture which was amazing and I'm so grateful for, and experiencing life near the jungle was like a childhood dream come true! Thank you so much to the Ortega family:)

My stay with Marisol and Octavio was the best experience I have ever had. They made me feel like I was at home and always in peace. The community is so interesting and beautiful, I cried before going because I didn't want to leave. Thank you Marisol and Octavio for the best experience ever.

Living with Marisol and Octavio was an incredible experience i won't ever forget. The genuity and passion driving the Kaparik the reserve can be felt from the arrival. My work started in the morning helping Octavio to build wooden cabañas. My girlfriend instead spent time with Marisol gathering endemic fruits and doing local handcraft. We were always granted delicious food from the farm itself. The other days we were taken to waterfalls, rivers and to spend time in the beautiful amazon forest. Mari and Octavio and the other volonteers made us feel at home and happy. Thanks Kapari ❤️

My friend and I had an amazing time with the family and volunteers. We only stayed about a week but felt that we were included in the family right from the start even despite the language barrier. They are a very warm and welcoming community and you learn a lot there about the culture and land just through observation. I was sick at the beginning of the stay and the mum (Marisol) made me an awesome drink that helped so much in my recovery. They also let me rest and there was no pressure to perform. Sami is a lovely host and her energy and excitement for the projects are infectious.

This experience was more than expected - in the best way. The Ortega family was welcoming, kind, and genuine. We were able to clean up the nearby beach, went to a local Talag festival, ate home cooked meals for every meal, met kind locals, created artisanal jewelry, swam in the river, practiced our Spanish, and much more. We have grown and learned so much from this experience. I could not recommend this project/family enough.

We had an incredible time staying with the Ortega family. They were super accommodating and welcoming. From the moment we showed up to when we left, we were made to feel like a part of the family. We learned so much about the indigenous culture from going on interactive hikes to making indigenous, artisanal jewelry. The food Marisol made for each meal was delicious and made using ingredients grown on their farm. The accommodations at Kaparik the reserve were more than expected, and the experience was truly life changing. Everyone we interacted with was truly genuine and kind-hearted.

Incredible experience! I learned a huge amount even in the short time I was here. It's a true way to connect with and learn about the local culture, food, and ways of living with little to no hand-holding. I can't think of a more sincere way to get in touch with kichwa traditions, live of the land, and contribute to an amazing project. I think this experience is something every person should take part in, but be prepared for a stark difference from any resort-ey vacation trip.

Marisol and Luis Octavio treated me like one of the family from the moment I arrived. I was delighted by the positive energy and happiness in the house, including other travelers there. I enjoyed taking part in everyday life from grinding cacao in the kitchen to cooking meals to chatting around the kitchen table. I also enjoyed the work- like learning how to weave leaves for a beautiful thatch roof we helped to build. On my last night there we had a very special experience together doing a cacao ceremony. I'd love to return to explore more of their land, which they are fighting to protect.

I had the BEST experience at the reserve. The Ortega family is incredibly kind and welcoming and I felt right at home. Marisol taught me about indigenous plant based medicine, nutrition, and cooking. The family grows everything from cacao, plantains, bananas, avocados, yuca, tomatoes, mandarin, fresh herbs and soo much more. We used the crops from the farm to cook at home & in the restaurant. Marisol helped me learn how to make artisanal jewelry, purses, and sew clothing. Their nephews & cousins all live nearby and always invited me on trips to waterfalls, rivers, hikes, etc. A great family!
